Football Squad Having Good Season TO STAGE PARADE THROUGH SYLVA, OPEN HOUSE, 12:30 Catamounts To Face Appalachian Tonight At 7:30 In Annual Classic Pictured above are members of the 1946 Catamount football team which is having one of the best seasons in the history of the grid game* here at W.C.T.C. The team will tonight face the strong Appalachian eleven in the annual Homecoming classic with the kick-off at 7:30. This contest will renew rivalry of long standing between the two schools, which was dropped during the war. MARY BROWN IS NAMED MAY QUEEN Students Elect Jean Hall As Maid Of Honor. 12 Others Are Chosen For Court Mary Brown, daughter of Mrs. Iola Brown, Asheville, was chosen Queen of May in a student election held October 13. Jean Hall, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Raines, Lake Toxaway, was elected maid of honor. Senior attendants chosen were Jean Wood, daughter of Mrs. W. K. Wood, Greenville, S. C; Ann So- dequist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Soderquist, Sylva; Merel Stamey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stamey, Waynesville; and Mary Moody, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Moody, Canton. Betty Lou Buckner, Ruby G. —Turn To Page Eight Linberg Announces Plans For The Band Mr. Florian Linberg, new instructor in the music department, has announced plans for the band. He believes that it will be possible to have a 25 or 60 piece band this year if enough interest is shown by the students. He also announced plans for the instrumental classes. The first class will be a string class for beginners. These will include a certain amount of violin violincello —Turn To Page Eight After Five Years Cats Renew Old Rivalry With Appalachian Twelve Students Are Capacity Crowd Expected tvt j t ixri » \in_ For First Post-War Home- Named In Who s Who | coming Game Tonight Twelve Western Carolina Teachers college students have been named in Who's Who in American colleges and universities for 1946- 47. Three of these students were accepted last year and are still enrolled. Warren Barnes, Robbinsville, president of the Western Carolina players two consecutive years; Russell Bird, Greensboro, president of the Men's House government: Mildred Cherry, Belmont, president of local and state F. T. A; Thelma Joyce Finch, Bailey, secretary of the Senate; Vada Lyda, Hendersonville, president of the Alpha Phi Sigma; Jean Hall Lake Toxaway, editor of the Western Carolinian; Elmer Neill, Cherryville, trainer of the football team; Clair Olson, Larned, Kansas, president of the Student Body; Maxie Wright, president of the Women's House government. The three students who were accepted last year are: Lynwood Halliburton, Hamlet, editor of the Catamount; Owen McDonald, Larned, Kansas, president of the Student Body, 194546; and Mary Moody, Canton, associate editor of the Catamount and a member of the senate. The Appalachian State Teachers college "Mountaineers" clash with the Catamounts tonight at 7:30 in what promises to be one of the largest attractions ever staged on Hunter field. Renewing an aged rivalry that was discontinued in 1941, Coach Tom Young will be meeting Mentor Flucie Stewart for the first time as the Catamounts seek their first gridiron victory over the Mountaineers. Coach Stewart's gridders, rated as a top team in the North State Conference, are given a slight edge as favorites in tonight's pigskin array. The Mountaineers boast a string of four conference victories with only a loss to Catawba as a blemish on their record. The Catamounts are undefeated in conference competition with only a tie with High Point against their record. This game, like all football games, will be decided by the play of the respective lines. Both teams present heavy rugged lines that have stood out against all opposition this fall. The Catamount forward wall led by Co-captain Pennell, Robinson —Turn To Page Three Flags will unfurl in the breeze, Western Carolina's doors will open in welcome, and students and faculty members will parade through the streets of Sylva when the first real Homecoming celebration since 1941 gets underway today. Sparked by the Appalachian- Cullowhee football game, a full schedule of events has been arranged for the afternoon by the Homecoming committee, of which Miss Alice Benton is chairman. Following lunch at 12:30, the three residence halls, the Student Union building, and Boodleville will hold open house for visitors. Each dormitory has arranged a special decoration as part of Senate sponsored competitive project contest. Led by the national colors and the Cherryville high school band, the parade will form at the Chevrolet and Ford filling stations and march to the courthouse steps where the band will present a concert. Second in line of march will be the entire membership of the Monogram club. Various sponsors and escorts selected from' classes and organizations, members from administrative offices, athletic committee, will follow. Promptly at 7:00 p. m., the college will hold memorial services for the students who died in World War II and in commemoration of Armistice day, November 11. President H. T. Hunter will make the welcome address and Ralph Sutton, business manager, will report —Turn To Page Four Superlatives Elected By The Senior Class Frankie Lee DeHart and Clair Olson are "friendliest" in the Senior class, according to the poll of senior superlatives elected last week. Mabel McCracken and Frank Plyler are "most likely to succeed." Prettiest girl went to Mary Brown, May Queen, and most handsome man to Charles Frazier. Benjamin Price and Mrs. Louise Edwards Cowan have the "best personality." Best all-round went to Anne Soderquist and Bill Buckner, while Maggie Sandlin drisp and Jack Carpenter are "most talented." Seniors voted Evelyn McCracken and Jake Phillips as "most popular." "Most athletic" was taken by Bee Jane Harris and N. A. Miller,
