County Drug Investigation Nets Several WCU Arrests, Continues Senior Basketball Standout Among Those Indicted For More on the Arrest Of Andre Gault, see page eight By COLIN BURCH Staff Writer Five Western Carolina University students and 15 others were arrested Friday and Monday following a year-long drug Investigation by local and state law enforcement authorities. Approximately $1 million worth of cocaine and small amounts of marijuana and LSD were confiscated. The Jackson County Sherrif's Department said Tuesday that 23 people had been Indicted Friday on 126 charges of trafficking, dealing or possesion- wlth-lntent-to-sell illegal drugs. One indictment was for marijuana, one for LSD and the remaining 124 for cocaine. Fourteen of the 20 people arrested had made bonds ranging from $10,000 to SI00,000 as of Tuesday afternoon. Three more people have yet to be arrested. The bust comes after a lengthy undercover operation that involved 15 officers of the sheriff's department and agents of the State Bureau of investigation. Most of the dealers arrested on cocaine charges were involved in "mldlevel importation and distribution," according to the sheriff's office. The marijuana and LSD dealing was considered to be "street level." All the undercover deals were done by two SBI agents, one of whom was a WCU graduate, according to an SBI spokesman. Most of the monitored SBI buys occured during the last six months. The SBI said that agents did not pose as students nor did the agency use phone taps during the Investigation. The rumored bust of 17 additional people on Monday was merely a continuation of the arrests to be made after the indictments were drawn up by a Jackson County Grand Jury on Friday. Fourteen people were in custody late Friday afternoon, and the remaining six of the 20 arrested were picked up Monday. The current WCU students that were arrested are Paul Joseph Fllipowski, Scott Taylor Dill, Andrew D. Page, Jeffery Lee Parker and basketball starter Robin Andre Gault. Two of the five have been released on bond, and another Is expected to make bail Friday, according to Dr. Glenn Stillion in Student Development. One of the students will withdraw from the university and another Is considering withdrawal. Stillion did not specify which students these were. Under the University of North Carolina system's new drug policy, the students Involved with cocaine will be expelled, and those Involved In marijuana will be suspended for one semester upon a civil conviction. Concerning the Indictment of four-year basketball starter Gault . athletic director Dr. Wanless said: "We are disappointed and concerned, but we don't feel there's an indictment against our program." Wanless also said that all WCU athletes are currently going through a drug education program. The Ashevilie Citizen on Saturday listed the names of former students Indicted and gave their former addresses. Though aboult half of those Indicted Included students or former students, according to Traffic and Security Director Gene McAbee. only five current students were arrested. The newspaper also listed the names of former student Robert Stewart Walln Jr. of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. A Lambda Chi Alpha brother said Tuesday that the fraternity was not involved with Walin's in- volvment In drugs and that Walin was no longer living at the Lambda Chi Alpha house, but in Florida. The SBI spokesman stressed that the drug Investigation began as a probe into Jackson County, not the university. Some of the SBI's findings in Jackson County lead to the arrests of students. ER NOT DOING MY JOB r of it than t had ever Aerosmith to Walk This Way 'We still sound like a garage band. We' re raw and unpolished even when we take the mistakes out," says Joe Perry. "There are a lot of records made that are nearly perfect. But they don't have the feeling we do for the music." Some garage band. With sales of more than 18 million albums, legions of some of rock's most fanatical fans, and a career spanning 15-plus years, Aerosmith has defined an era for an entire generation. . As other musicians today invariably credit Aerosmith for influencing their music, in fact learning everything they know from them, and still others copy the Aerosmith style and bad-boy attitude. It's apparent that this band has reached the level of rock 'n' roll legend. The highly sucessful rock band Aerosmith will perform In Western Carolina University's Llston B. Ramsey Center Monday. March 29, with special guest White Lion. The WCU stop on Aetosmith's Permanent Vacation tour is sponsored by Last Minute Productions. Western's student programming organization. With Permanent Vacation, the band's ninth studio album and second Geffen Records (there are clso three live albums and one greatest hits package) , Aerosmith expands on the legend with a hard- rockin', blues-based record that rivals those early classics such as Tovs In The Attic and Rocks and singles such as Sweet Emotion, Dream On and Walk This Way. It hasn't been an easy road back to the top though. Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whltford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), and Joey Kramer (drums) have led the rock 'n' roll life. They've been to the brink of hellfire. "When you start a band, everyone puts aside personality differences and you join in the great struggles." says Tom Hamilton. Edwin CarNon Photot Western Carolina Students were victim to random tire slashing early Sunday morning. Nine cars at the Tau Kappa Epsilon house were vandalised at approximately 2 a.m. The cars had one to two tires gashed each and one windshield broken. Residents at the TKE house are suspicious of unwelcome visitors who were not admitted into their house. The Jackson County Police were called but have been unable to locate suspects or evidence. Thirty minutes later, five more cars parked in the Walker freshman parking lot had one tire slashed each. The WCU Traffic and Security is investigating the crime but has been unable to make any arrests. ,. ... —Jennifer Hardy Ne# Post Office Hours Accidentally omitted from last week's Issue, following are new post office hours as announced by big brother: Open Lunch Closing Ctosec MONDAY 8:30 am 1:00 -2:00 pm 5:00 pm TUESDAY 8:30 am 1:00*2:00 pm 5:00 pm WEDNESDAY 8:30 am None 12:00 noo THURSDAY 8:30 am 1.00-2:00 pm 6:00 pm FRIDAY 8:30 am 1:00-2:00 pm 5:00 pm SATURDAY CLOSED The Second Installation of our Cullowhee incorporation Series Will Appear Next Chris Geis •zCt' PUT t the OS, 1 boys, and keep those monthly p cornlno,.' -r-Tom Robbihs. frorn Another Rp Aitiacjipii "I KNEW HERSEY HAWKINS WAS I the rock up, and I knew I was g< rock up. The Western Carolinian RE: Booking the Herb and Herb Show for another couple years' run at the Ramsey Center DATE: Thursday, Feb. 25 Dear Folks: From what I understand. Herb Krusen doesn't have a chance to keep the job of head basektball coach's job at Western Carolina. I think that's a shame, and I think you folks need to do something about it. You remember Herb, right? When Steve Cottrell, the head coach here for 10 years, just up and quit the job last Nov. 22, you were in a bind. So you hired one of Cottrell's assistants. Herb, a 29-year-old who was in his third season at Western and who had previously been an assistant at Wake Forest when Wake was making trips to the NCAA playoffs. You named him "Interim" head coach.' Herb was a little shocked, and I guess he was flattered. But he was also very nervous, because he was In an Impossible situation and had a lot of pressure on him — not only to win for the university but to win to give himself a shot at the head coach's job here or maybe a head coach's job some where else later on. Herb was thrust Into a position of opportunity — who in the profession wouldn't want to be a Division I head basketball coach before he's 30? — but he was simultaneously thrust Into a position of Impossible proportions. To name a few drawbacks, I could mention last year's debacle, when Western had a losing record for the first time in almost a decade; the fact thatnumerous players had quit the club over the last three seasons; the fact that the team was to play nationally- ranked Kansasin Its second game; or even that, quite simply. Herb didn't have a lot of talent, or a lot of players, to work with this year. Things stared well for Herb. We won our first game and then took big, bad Kansas down to the final minute, only to lose, 68- 63. Kansas. NCAA tournament- bound Kansas. Then we played well over at Tennessee in front of c big crowd, and we Impressec those folks. Herb even had a win' ning record In mid-January. That's when thlngsstartec going sour. I know, I know, we've only won two conference game: and may not make the confer ence tournament. But look whe we've played down to the wire and, despite the fact that we onl^ have seven first-rate players, we could have beaten a number o those clubs and been In the middle of the pack In the Southerr Conference. Then the Andre Gaul' thing came. But disregard that From what sources have told me that was going to happen any way; it had been brewing for c while.
