  • W 6 S t 6 f western Carolina university's independent student voice Students Respond to Controversial Plans by James Carter On Tuesday, August 13, Chancellor John Bardo openly discussed some of his plans for the university with members of the WCU faculty, according to an OPI press release. Among Bardo's plans is an attempt to require all WCU students to have their own personal computers. "It is very doubtful that students can get a first- rate education any longer if they are not capable of using technology and if they do not have access on a 24- hour basis to computers," Bardo said. Bardo plans to ask the board of trustees to help him make his idea into policy. Some students disagree with the chancellor's new idea. "The rationale behind the proposal is sound," said student Melvin Burnette. "Computers provide many advantages in the world today. However, I take issue with the idea of requiring students to own one, because it does place a financial burden on less affluent students." Student Philip Sudlow commented, "I believe students having their own computers is a plus, but I don't think it should be required. The only way for the plan to work would be if financial aid could be increased. One student finds the idea "ridiculous, elitist, extravagant, and not economically feasible." "The world is becoming a more and more challenging place," he added. "I think that academic expectations should be raised." "I don't think it is a good idea," student Ron Van Der Laan stated. "Lower-budget students might be kept from coming to this university. Intelligent students who really want to go to WCU won't be able to fulfill their dream. So, don't do this." Student Elizabeth Likis finds the idea "ridiculous, elitist, extravagant, and not economically feasible." "WCU has excellent computer labs that are already available," she explained. "Why shouldn't we share?" Bardo, who says his plan would pertain to all full-time students, stated, "We do not want to exclude low-income students from the university. However, there are reasons to believe that this [idea] could be managed." Under the proposed policy, all entering full- time students may be required to have their own computers as early as fall 1998. However, some students doubt that Bardo's new revelation is a good one. Western Wins National Acclaim for Fund-Raising OPI WCU is one of the only two regional comprehensive institutions of higher education in the United States to be nationally recognized for dramatic improvement in fund- raising efforts. On July 14, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) presented a 1997 Circle of Excellence in Educational Fund Raising award to WCU's Office of University Advancement. The awards ceremony took place in Washington, D.C. Claire Eldridge, vice chancellor of advancement and external affairs, accepted the award on behalf of WCU. "Western is honored to be recognized by CASE," Eldridge said. "We thank our alumni, friends, faculty and staff, and business supporters, without whom this significant growth and recognition would not be possible.
