SC Regains Automatic Baseball Bid ASHEVILLE — In a July decision the Southern Con ferenc^ regained its NCAA Tournament automatic bid in baseball for the 1995 season. The NCAA determines which conferences receive automatic bids in baseball by compilion a Rating Per centage Index (RPI) for each league. Although specific RPI figures were not released, the NCAA ranked the Southern Conference 17th among 32 baseball leagues in 19941 The Southern Conference failed to receive a automatic b|id in 1994, mainly because of an overall weak non-conference schedule in 1993 that drove the league RPI downward. Still, the conference was able to place two teams in the NCAA Tournament. Conference tournament champion The Citadel defeated Ohio Valley Conference member Middle Tennessee in an NCAA play-in series] and regular season winner WCU earned an at- large bid despite losing a three-game series to Miami. New Season, New Coach For Lady Cat Volleyball Team Derek Smolik Assistant Sports Editor For the first time in 13 seasons, Western Carolina University will have a new volleyball coach on the sidelines. Sara Martin will take over the reins as the volleyball coach after serving as an assistant to Trish Howell for the past two seasons. Martin, a 25-year old native of Middletown, IN, was named howell's replacement last spring after Howell's contract was not renewed. Martin will take over a team that went 4-27 overall last year and 0-7 in Southern Conference play after being picked to finish second in preseason polls. The record was the worst in the program's history and was the second losing season in the last three years. "I think that they n^eueu a change," Martin said. "There's a different atmosphere tbis year, there's a lot of enthusiasm and excitement on the team." Martin will not come to a team without talent, however. Eight of the. the letter winners from last season return to the team, led by Rebecca Ballard, Kristin Baxter, Emily Tillotson, Mary O. Goebel and Catherine Sawyers. Other letter I winners returning are Tara Chadwick, Jan Safely and Tricia Savoia. The one starter lost for the Cats was a big loss, however, as Jennifer Ross, the school's and Southern Conference's all-time kills leader moved on. Despite the loss, Martin feels that the Cats can become a better team without Ross. "I think that we will be stronger as a balanced squad, instead of a one-woman team," said Martin. "Everybody needs to simply carry out their own responsibility, instead of relying on one person to do the job." Tillotson has been ci solid middle blocker for the Cats over the last three years, when not injured. A lingering achilles tendon injury has taken a part of the last two seasons from Tillotson. Martin expressed her hope that Tillotson could become a leader on the team in h<;r final year. "As a senior, Emily will need to take a major leadership role both on and off the court," Martin said. "Emily is an excellent blocker and a solid hitter. We will need both to be competitive." Ballard, a junior, is also playing at middle blocker and Martin ant cipates continued improvement from the 6-3 Pinehurst native. Ballard led the team in total blocks and averaged .9 kills per game. Though only 5-5 in height, Kristin Baxter is big WCU photo by Justin Menickelli New Head Volleyball Coach Sara Martin practices with the team she inherited last spring. The home season begins Sept. 6 against Mars Hill College. on heart and has quietly become one of the Southern Conference's top setters in just two years. Baxter ranked fourth in the SC in assists per game and tied for third in service aces. She already ranks fourth on WCU's all-time career assists list.
