  • August 25, 1994 Western Carolinian Features g^MST /rV^fe Sculptures at do orje's expense " Land of the Pay-Raws," is Jim Gallucci's contribution to WCU's landscape. (No, it's not Gumby with a tan.) Elizabeth Cullinan Contributing Writer This Summer several sculptures have been erected about WCU. Although applauding cosmetic improvement on campus, students were concerned about the cost of the art, and curious about the selections themselves. However, students need not fret about costly sculptures delving into sacred university funds. The Western Carolina University Outdoor Sculpture Program is responsible for the sculpture displays. The program, headed by Bill Buchanan, assistant professor of art, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Art and the Office of Aceademic Affairs in conjunction with the Cullowhee Arts Festival, celebrates its second year on Western's campus. Sculptures presented by professional artists are chosen by a ten member panel of faculty and administration. Winning entries are displayed on campus and are for sale. One of last year's winning entries, entitled "Guardian Angels" by Be Gardiner, was generously donated to the university. These twin sculptures are located on the East wing of the H.F.R. Administration building. Along with viewing the sculptures, this program allows students and faculty to attend lectures given by the artists. (Times will be announced at a later date.) Someone will always disagree about the particular art chosen. However, this program not only enhances Western's appearance, it enables one to become educated about a subject that may have previously been overlooked. In the future, the contest intends to include student input. Give Blood # Emergency Need ! •Monday, August 29 •12-5 pm •U.C.
