Paul Menahrt pitched brilliantly and Keith LeClair and Nelloms provided key home runs. Shelton Grant drew a basses loaded walk to push in another run and Grant Brlttaln who Leggett cited for outstanding defense, rapped an RBI double. Menhart gave up just four hits in tossing his third complete game of the season. He also struck out eight batters, throwing 103 pitches (66 strikes). Danny Greene had an RBI double for the Paladins and Marvin Hardy had a two out run scoring single In the fourth. It was the last hit for the Paladins as Menhart retired the last 10 batters he faced. Next the Catamounts are scheduled to play 14th ranked Clemson Thursday at 3 p.m. before travelling to Charleston, South Carolina for a pivotal series with The Citadel this weekend. The Catamounts defeated the Bulldogs two out of three games when the Citadel visited Western. The Catamounts will host UNCA next Thursday and ETSU Wednesday. Junior Terrell Wagner, playing for the purple team, intercepted a Smith pass on the purple 1-yard line, allowing the gold defense, led by Derrick Harrison, to score a safety one play later. The gold team tacked on their final points with 1:06 left as Cottrell connected with Baxter on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The gold finished with a total of 408 yards offensively. Baxter, a freshman from Thomasvllle, was the surprise standout of the game, finishing with six catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Jackson got his second of three touchdowns with 0:23 left in the first half, plunging In from the 4 and upping the score to 14-10. A 26-yard scamble by Cottrell at the end of the third quarter set up another Jackson touchdown. Jackson, who finished with 77 yards on 16 carries, pushed the ball over from the 2-yard line with 7:38 remaining In the game to make It 21-10. The gold defense added both offensively and defenslvley. Quarterbacks Mike Thomas and Mike Simpson played briefly in the second half, showing some depth at that position. Defensively, veterans Harrison, Kell Helms, Scott Arant, David Jonson, Geno Seg- ers, and Larry Inman all had solid games, along with relative newcomers Ricky Gardin, Martin Tate, Chris Monteleone, and Brett Baker. The game gave almost no indication as to who will be the regular replacement for All- American place-kicker Kirk Roach. Possinger Completes Coaching Staff Holy Cross Assistant Rounds Out New Head Basketball Coaches' Staff Dave Possinger. Western Carolina University's new head basketball coach, has completed his staff with the appointment of a new assistant coach and the retention of a member of last season's WCU staff. Mike Palma, an assistant coach at Holy Cross for the past five seasons, is the new assistant coach and Herb Gilchrist, who joined the WCU staff last December, is the holdover assistant. "We have a pair of assistant coaches that complement each others talents," said Possinger who was hired to rebuild WCU's program after averaging 33 wins a season In nine years at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York. "I am confident that these young men can help us reach the goals of the program and extremely pleased to announce their association with Western Carolina University's basketball program." he stated. Palma. 31, Is a Long Island. New York native and 1980 graduate of lona College in New Rochelle, New York, but has strong North Carolina ties. He played basketball at Wake Forest University for two seasons (1975-76 & 1976-77) before transferring to lona and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's All Freshman team In 1976. Following his graduation from lona (B.A. In English), he returned to the state as head basketball coach at Bishop McGuinness Memorial High School In Winston-Salem. He posted a 77-22 record at Bishop McGuinness, won two North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships and was voted Forsyth County Coach of the Year in 1983. He became an assistant to George Blaney at Holy Cross College In Worchester, Mass. In 1983 and served as the Crusaders' recruiter for five years. "Mike Is in charge of instituting and implementing our recruitment program," said Possinger upon Palma's official appointment here Thursday. "He developed his recruiting and coaching skills under an outstanding leader In George Blaney at Holy Cross. He also has a lot of contacts In North Carolina and is very familiar with the region from his days at Wake Forest and coaching in Winston-Salem. Mike Is an intense, energetic,outgoing and Intelligent recruiter," he added. Gilchrist, 25, came to WCU In December to fill the vacancy created when Steve Cottrell, the Catamounts' head coach of 10 seasons, resigned prior to the beginning of the season and assistant coach Herb Krusen was elevated to the head coaching position. He had been employed by the NBA'a Atlanta Hawks In sales and public relations prior to coming to WCU. The Harnett County, NC native played colleglately at East Carolina University (1980- 84) and was captain of the 1983- 84 ECU team. "I am Impressed with Herb's knowledge of the game and his rapport with the players," said Possinger. "He is going to be a tremendous asset as he will be our link with the players, faculty and last season's program," he explained. Possinger says Gilchrist's duties will be with scouting, recruiting and on-floor coaching.
