The versatility of HE programs allows the department to offer students plans of study which prepare them for full and ready entry into a variety of careers. A recent survey revealed that HE graduates have the highest employment rate among HE graduates in the North Carolina University system. There are good employment and graduate opportunities in fields within the home economics related areas, especially if students do not limit themselves to a particular geographic location. There is no shortage of jobs for well-prepared, career- oriented graduates having knowledge and experience in fields addressing, directly or indirectly, problems of families. Industrial Technology B.S. in Education in Industrial Arts. This is a four-year degree program for the preparation of Industrial Arts teachers in junior and senior high schools. This is a four-year program which offers students a General Education background and special training in management and industrial processes. The curriculum is planned to provide students with a wide spectrum of technical skills and knowledge. The curriculum is advantageous, since it prepares students for a wide range of technical careers. Most Industrial Technology graduates obtain employment at entry level supervisory- management positions. Graduates work in production areas such as planning, time and motion study, and plant layout. Graduates of the program have an excellent record of employment and advancement in Western North Carolina companies, as well as in national firms. Starting salaries for these graduates average $1000-$1300 per month. The B.S. in Industrial Technology also has an option called the In-Service option for students who are working full-time and desire to complete an education part-time. This program is offered at nights and on Saturday at both Cullowhee and UNC-A campuses to facilitate the learning of the students. B.S. in Education in Occupational Education: This is a four-year program which is designed specifically for the craftsman who wants to teach. Welding, auto-mechanics, body-reparing, machining, etc. are but a few of the areas for which there is a need for teachers in the high schools and community colleges. The department has developed basically an upper division program for talented craftsmen in these areas. The intent of the program is to convert a welder to a teacher of welding or an auto mechanic to a teacher of auto- mechanics, etc. Starting salaries are not depicted because there is such a wide variety of salaries due to the fact that the craftsmen have been working for years and demand higher salaries than a young graduate would. B.S. in Industrial Distribution: This is a four-year program designed to satisfy the requirements of industrial distributors. This program prepares men and women for sales, sales management, and mid-management positions with wholesale distributors who purchase, warehouse, sell, distribute, and service a wide variety of industrial products.
