  • Western Carolinian January 25,1996 News Vice Chancellor Search Concludes by Jessica Devaney Staff Reporter WCU's search for a new vice chancellor for advancement and external affairs is wraping up. As of January 9, 1996, the number of finalists was down to five candidates; by January 20, the finalists numbered three individuals. Two of the three withdrew for personal reasons, leaving Dr. David Brown as the final candidate. A committee of 16 members from WCU has met repeatedly since November. Their search has included reference and interview calls, along with meeting and interviewing the candidates themselves. The committee has held receptions to HELP WANTED give community members an opportunity to meet and assess the candidates, giving their input. The committee has been headed by Rosemary DePaolo, dean of the WCU College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. David Brown is expected to be the last finalist to visit. Brown is :he former vice president of the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation md the vice president of Institutional Advancement at Troy State University. Brown at- ended Central Connecticut State as an English major, was publications director at Elon College, and has previously taught sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade English classes. While applying for the position of vice chancellor, Brown has met with faculty, administration, and external leaders in Asheville. He stated, "Everyone I Wakeley Retires as Vice Chancellor by Stephanie Tully Staff Reporter On August 15, 1996, Western Carolina University will gain a teacher, but lose a vice chancellor with the retirement of John H. Wakelely. H He is retiring as vice chancellor for academic affairs, a position he has held since 1987. He also served as interim chancellor in 1994-95 after the retirement of former chancellor Myron L. Coulter. Chancellor John W. Bardo stated, "Jack Wakeley is a longtime colleague whom I have known since John Wakeley prepares to step down as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. Photo courtesy ofOPl. we were both deans. I have the greatest respect for him both as an academic scholar and as an administrator. I know his contributions to our students in his role as classroom professor in the department of psychology will be as fine as those he made to them as vice chancellor. I feel very fortunate to have had Jack's assistance during the transition as I have taken over the position of chancellor." Wakeley served as the dean of the college of arts and sciences at Memphis State University, before his appointment at Western. He was also the chairman of the department of psychology at Michigan State University and held various other faculty and administrative positions there from 1964 to 1980. As vice chancellor at Western, Wakeley led successful efforts to establish master's programs in physical therapy and educational administrations, as well as the university's first program in education at the doctoral level. He was also principally responsible for creating faculty development programs and for strengthening the university's academic programs in the visual arts. A national search for a successor to Wakeley will begin immediately, according to Bardo. "In the meanwhile," he said, "I'm grateful that Jack will continue in the position through the spring semester to help with a number of important academic issues and with setting the budgets for the 1996-97 academic year." have met at WCU has been very cordial, friendly and has freely given information or answered questions when needed." The last reception for Dr. Brown was held on Tuesday, January 23, at 5:30 pm in the Allied Health Building at Southwestern Community College.
