  • 14 editorial October 21,1998 inian Don't Cry Wolf on Rape | Independents Challenge To the Editor: I'm tired of hearing the word "rape" being screamed every weekend. This is what I don't understand: You ladies, if you deserve to be called ladies, go out to a party, drink a little, flirt more than you realize and end up in the sack with someone you thought you wanted when you were drunk, but regretted your actions upon entering sobriety the following day. This is what you proclaim: "I wasn't watching my drink being made...he got me drunk...he forced me to his bedroom...I didn't scream because he would have hit me..." Baloney. You dressed up, went out, and drank a little. No one pried your mouth open and made you drink. Are you so shallow that you are afraid to decline a drink for fear of being ridiculed? Let's not forget how many times everyone has been warned about taking opened drinks. And when does a guy ask an intoxicated female to his bedroom and not want sex? Ladies, I can guarantee you that if you agree to go into a guy's bedroom, he's thinkin' he's gettin' some. So, if you don't want to put yourself in that position— don't, because you'll end up concocting a big ol' white lie when you realize that you made a mistake. And instead of saying, "Oh well, I made an error of judgement, won't happen again," you say, "I'm not accepting any of the blame. It was his fault. He should have known I wouldn't do that if I was sober. None of it is my fault. I was raped." And then you "ladies" get all dolled up for the following weekend to do it all over again. Don't you think it's about time you started learning from yourselves and take a little responsibility for your actions? I guess what I'm saying is: Yes, some females are viciously raped and it's terrible when that happens. However, those of you who "cry wolf are only hurting other females who really are rape victims because society will be too hesitant to believe. "They made me drink." Give me a break. -Melissa Jacobs Dear Editor, In response to the letter in last weeks edition from the IFC President and Secretary I would like to add a few things from the point of view of a male independent. A majority of independents know that Frats & Sororities have a philanthropy. This is a good thing, even though most people feel that a larger sum of dues aren't going toward the philanthropy. However most independents do not know what the Frats & Sororities are doing on a weekly, monthly, or sometimes yearly basis. I am aware that Derby Days was a- success and that Greek Games usually has a large turnout and raises a lot of money. No one that knows of these events disagrees. However a large amount of the school does not know of these events. I can honestly say that if my girlfriend was not in a sorority I would not have known of Derby Days until the football game when the trophy was presented. I also agree that the Tau Kappa Epsilon's (Teke's) do a lot of community service. But the vast majority of students on campus would not know that unless it was announced on Z91 or printed in the Western Carolinian. The idea of a weekly column would be good for Greeks but I fear that it would be weighted toward one fraternity/sorority because they are more active than the others. So I am making a challenge to the Greeks. Why not get some activities going involving independents? Greeks are always asking us to donate money for this and that and that is a good thing, but why not ask us to have some fun and join in some activities other than the stereotypical parties on Friday/ Saturday night. -Tim Hines The Carolinian welcomes letters from its readers.
