  • The Greeks Fraternities Delta Sigma Phi Delta Sigma Phi fraternity was founded on December 10, 1899, as cooperative movement of the students from the City College of New York University. Delta Omicron, here at WCU, was affiliated nationally in December of 1959. Delta Sig ranks among the top 20 fraternities in membership as well as number of chapters. The two major social functions are Carnation Ball and Shipwreck. They are nationally known as the Fraternity of Engineered Leadership. A college fraternity such as Tau Kappa Epsilon, is a select group of men with similar ideals, hopes and purposes bonded together by deep friendship and mutual understanding. TKE has a spirit of genuine democracy and chooses its members "not for wealth, rank, or honor, but for personal worth and character." Tau Kappa Epsilon, "The fraternity of life," was founded at Illinois Wesleyan University on January 10, 1899. Alpha Phi Omega The finest frontier...Service! Like Star Trek, service is more popular today than ever before. But our program of service has never been cancelled throughout our fifty-three year long history. That is why we are the largest Greek letter fraternity in the Nation. Alpha Phi Omega is a coed fraternity that is open to both men and women. The service ideas of Alpha Phi Omega are derived from, but not governed by, the Scouting movement. Alpha Phi Omega men and women engage in different areas of service. Alpha Phi Omega means service and in the course of performing service leadership emerges and friendships are formed. Pi Kappa Phi "Nothing shall tear us asunder" is the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity motto that members follow as thev promote their ideals of fellowship, trust, scholarship, Christian manhood, and citizenship. The "Pi Kapps" were founded nationally on December 10, 1904, at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, and chartered locally in January, 1967. Known as the "Friendly Fraternity." their activities include intramural sports, an annual Rose Ball, Rat Fink Ball, as well as numerous charity drives. Theta Xi Kappa Alpha Living up to the ideals of Robert E. Lee and the South, was the purpose of the founding of the Kappa Alpha Order in December, 1865, at Washington and Lee University. From there, Kappa Alpha has grown to over 110 chapters and over 70,000 members nationwide. Such men as Leon Jaworski, Dean Rusk, Gen. George Patton, Gen George Marshall, Gen Crenshal, Fran Tarkington, J. Edgar Hoover and Carl Albert have worn the badge of the Kappa Alpha Order. The Delta Alpha chapter at WCU was founded on October 2, 1964. The KA's are active in campus leadership positions, intramurals, and fund raising activities for worthy causes. The year ends with their annual Old South Weekend and the KA National Leadership Institute. Pi Kappa Alpha Pi Kappa Alpha was founded on March 1, 1868, at the University of Virginia in Charlotteville. The fraternity stresses high moral standards and scholarship. Pi Kappa Alpha, known as "PIKA" was chartered on the campus of Western Carolina on February 12, 1967. The social highlight of the Pi Kappa Alpha year is the annual Dream Girl Weekend. It was founded at Renselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, on April 29, 1864. Lambda Chi Alpha The Western Carolina colony of Lambda Chi Alpha was founded as Sigma Tau Sigma in February, 1968 and became a chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha in February 1969. The Lambda Chi's are proud to be the recipients of the Interfraternity Council's Scholarship Trophy for the highest Quality Point Ratio for seven consecutive years. Campus highlights are the annual Sorority Kidnap in the Fall and Raft Race in the Spring. The social highlight of Lambda Chi is the annual Crescent Weekend. Sororities Alpha Xi Delta Alpha Xi Delta, "A clear vision of life, that with gracious and kindly hearts we may share both joy and sorrow, and bring into living reality the sisterhood of women." These words are from our symphony and are a part of the ideals that Alpha Xi's live for. Alpha Xi Delta Epsilon Gamma Chapter at WCU is both a close and active chapter. You can find Alpha Xi's petitioning for the Jackson County Animal shelter, raising money for the Lung Association, participating in Greek Week, the annual Alpha Xi Delta Wheelbarrow race, and other sponsored campus programs. You can see them in Little Sister organizations, such as Fraternity sweethearts, and active in many university service organizations. Alpha Xi Delta is the ten-year recipient of the Women's Recreation Award for sorority league and was nominated best Sorority of the Year for 1980. The sorority's pen is the golden quill which was founded April 13, 1893 at Lombard College, Illinois. Our flower is the Pink Killarney rose, our colors are double blue and gold, and our mascot is the Fuzzy Bear. Our Philanthropy is the National Lung Association. B Alpha Xi Delta is service projects, good times together at Golden Weekend, cheering together at football games, and active participation in campus life.
