The purpose of SECT is to provide emergency service for WCU faculty, staff, students and visitors, including off-campus emergencies. SECT is manned entirely by volunteer students. To become a permanent member of the crew, students must go through a ten week training period. Training sessions for all members and trainees are held weekly for a minimum of two hours per week. Emphasis is placed on a two-phase emergency program involving treatment and transport. The knowledge of immediate treatment saved at least five lives last year said Jerry Heath, last year's crew chief. In all of these emergencies, radial arteries had been severed, and the victims would have bled to death if immediate medical care had not been available. SECT receives funding for operation through the infirmary, which is supported by student fees. However, funding covers only equipment: it is the volunteer members that make the organization possible. Last year. SECT had some well qualified members. Five members were certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). To become an EMT, it is necessary to take 81 hours of classes and pass a state board examination. Most members of the team live in Moor dormitory in a co-ed living situation and get reduced room rates. Some crew members live off-campus or in other dorms, however. SECT desparately needs volunteers according to staff members. The organization is open to all full or part-time students at Western. To apply, interested persons should contact the organization in Moore Dormitory.
