  • LETTERS. Western Carolina University PO Box66Cullowhee. North Carolina 28723 Where Is He? Dear Editor, Earlier in the semester, some friends and 1 were listening to WWCU one Saturday evening from 12a.m.-4 a.m. We heard a voice that was smooth, sultry and sew We had never heard anything like it before and listened the following week for the same person. But something went wrong with the power and we didn't get a chance to listen to this person. We just recently heard his voice on WVVCl again, last week, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. We had wondered what happened to him because we never have heard from him since. But last week we were all mesmerized by his beautiful sexy voice and thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it was but a couple ol seconds. We've been wondering what his name was, so we could tell him we enjoy listening to him and we think he should get back on the air. Recently, we found out who the "Ice Man" really is, so now we can thank him for making this a very rewarding semester by sharing his talented voice with us and we would like to wish him a very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. We hope to hear you again next semester. Some very appreciative listeners. Student Apathy Dear Editor, It seems that SGA has been getting a lot of publicity lately from the Carolinian, most of it not so favorable. Each Thursday the Carolinian is full of editorials from SGA and Carolinian editors throwing words at each other. I have heard several comments from the students saying that they no longer read the editorial pages for that reason. This is a shame because it reflects the high level of student apathy that allows SGA to continue its present course. On Wednesday, December 1, there was an SGA election for nine more commuter senators. How many people knew about it? Sure, there was a news broadcast, ^but the emphasis was on the LMP voting for major concerts next semester. And nothing was said about having to be a commuter to vote. I wasn't aware of that until 1 tried to vote and SGA president Blake Brown kindly pointed out to me that it had been publicized in the Carolinian and on the radio. Mr. Brown, I have copies of the SGA columns and the radio annoucement. None contain any mention of who could vote. At least I tried to vote. Only 300 people voted out of some 3,000 plus commuters! What a turn out. Speaking of senators, it has been brought to my attention that one of Scott Hall's dorm senators doesn't even live in Scott. He was allowed to run even though he was in temporary housing. I don't know how legal that is, but it doesn't appear to be fair. And how about the "impeachment" of the senators with more than two absences? C'mon guys, this is getting to be a joke. I can barely understand 11 minute senate meetings, but you're inability to clean up your own act is ridiculous. A senator who is absent more than twice should be axed, no matter who he is; it's in your rules. Now comes student apathy. It is obvious that apathy is what you (SGA) thrive on. How else could you get away with all this? The facts I have pointed out may seem petty, but they're only the tip of the iceburg. Despite the fact that the students of Western Carolina University are suffering from an epidemic of apathy, there are some who do care about what's going on in Cullowhee. Why not work with the students instead of directing from your ivory tower'.' We're really not such bad people. Let's have some more publicity about what you're doing. Kay Arrowood is doing a fine job, but she's only one person. Most students don't even know that they can go to Student Senate meetings and sit in. It's not our fault when we're not informed. Name withheld by request. Feasting and drinking, giving in to tempting sweets, goodies and leisurely hours spent watching television all add on pounds before we even realize it. It's difficult to maintain one's weight over the holidays but it can be done. Here are a few tips to make Christmas a little less fattening. Place less food on your plate and don't get seconds. Eat slowly and enjoy your food! If you are full after a meal, pass up dessert. If you drink alcoholic beverages, choose those lower in calories and drink them slowly. Wine has fewer calories than beer or mixed drinks. Eggnog without added liquor has fewer calories and tastes just as good. (Try it!) At parties and at home, snack on fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and plain popcorn instead of cookies, cakes and candy. Try to get some kind of routine physical exercise over the holidays, even if it means doing situps in front of the television. When you leave a plate of brownies out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, don't cheat and eat them yourself! Senate Notes by Charles Bonnell Though the past has been filled with controversy between SGA and the paper, let's hope for a brighter future. The problems seem to be coming to an end, an end ' I'm happy to see. Since December is a time for celebration and forgiveness, I hope all parties involved will learn to accept each other and start "anew" for the upcoming year. As millions of other people will make New Year's Resolutions on January first, so will I. My resolutions will be to renew old acquaintances and to "give-in" to new ideas and concepts. I hope to have many of the small problems which have occured in the past semester "straightened out". 1 look forward to the best semester vet and 1 hope you do too. I o the outgoing seniors, I wish you good luck in you future endeavors. I hope you survive to acquire your goals and my thoughts will be with you. To the students who will be staying at W.C.U., you can anticipate a very good semester. Ihe Senate expects a good upcoming semester, especially with the nine newly elected commuter Senators. I am, however, somewhat disappointed at the low voter turnout. Although the weather was poor, this should not have effected the turnout. The l.MP election to choose possible bands for upcoming concerts was a huge success. I still cannot possibly conceive how an election of this magnitude can gain more votes than one to choose the Student Senate. This shows the priorities of the students at Western Carolina. In saying this, I do realize that the concert vote was open to everyone and the Commuter Senator election was only open to commuter students. It saddens me to think that commuter students are this apathetic in choosing senators to represent them. An election of this magnitude should have been considered important to all of those who should have been represented. I'm sorry.for you that it was not. On to brighter things... Have a safe holiday and remember, the Student Senate is your voice in government, use it! If you have a problem that needs attending to, contact your senator or an SGA representative. We care. Once again, have a good holiday. We look forward to serving you in the future. Until next year... Megcin^^ Hwy. 64 & 107 Cashiers, N. C.
