  • News Briefs A collection of contemporary paintings by Nancy Camden Witt is on display through Dec. 15 in the Chelsea Gallery located on the first floor of the U.C. Witt's paintings have been shown in more than 50 exhibitions in the lust, including 20 one-woman shows. Her work has also been exhibited in the Barbara Fiedler Gallery of Washington, D.C, Touchstone Gallery of New York, and 20th Century Gallery of Williamsburg, Va. Among Witt's paintings are self-portraits she describes as "an attempt to find out where I think I amat a particular point in my life because I'm not always where 1 think 1 am., and I like surprises." For the mind and the body, Witt uses symbols such as the sea, sun, glass jars, eggs, and reflections. Her work has been described as reflecting intrigue and mvsterv Pat Rogers, Mail Supervisor for residence hall mail delivery, sa\s, "While you are gone for Christmas holidays, your mail continues to arrive in Cullowhee daily. I his not only poses a problem for the Housing Mail Room while you are gone, it also hinders effective mail delivery when you return. To help alleviate this problem, students should do the following: 1. Those who are returning for spring '83 semester should stop their newspaper service from December 17 through January 17 The volume of newspapers received over this 30-day period causes many problems for our mail personnel. 2. Students who are not returning for spring semester should have their newspaper subscriptions cancelled and should inform magazine publishers of their new address. Also, make certain you have left a mail forwarding card with the Housing Mail Room. Forms for informing friends and neighbors of your new address are available at the U.S. Post Office. Following these few suggestions will greatly improve your mail service in the spring, lt will also benefit the Housing Mail Room markedly." Clubs and Organizations On October 27 and 28 Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity and Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity co-sponsored the Fall 1982 Red Cross Bloodmobile. A total of 357 pints were donated at the bloodmobile which was held in the Grandroom of the University Center. WCU nursing and lab tech. student volunteers assited the Red Cross personnel. The event is held three times a year on campus. The next bloodmobile at WCU will be held on January 26 and 27, 1983, in the University Center Grandroom. For further information contact APO vice-president Richard Griffin at 227-4187. Western Carolinian/^ecemb^r^^l^ The Society of Manufacturing Engineers will have their semi-annual pancake breakfast on Friday December the 10th from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. The location will be in the Belk Building on the second floor. All students, faculty and staff are invited for some good old home cooking. WWCU radio (FM 90.5) will have live remotes throughout the morning. So don't miss this great breakfast feast. The International Folk Dance Group of Cullowhee will sponsor a workshop on Saturday, December 4th in the Grandroom at the University Center. The workshop will be taught by Steve Tucker, from Winston-Salem, and is geared to beginning and intermediate dancers. There is no charge. Steve Turner, a native of Washington, D.C, has been active as a dancer and teacher with the Chapel Hill International Folk Dance Group for 13 years. He has attended the Stockton, California Folk Dance Camp for 8 years and presently leads a group in Winston-Salem. The morning session will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. focusing on easy-to-learn dances for everyone. The afternoon session will run from 2-6p.m. with the teaching of intermediate level dances. Both sessions will include line, circle and couple dances. Countries represented include Macedonia, Israel, Yugoslavia, Serbia, and many others. Folk dancing as a recreational activity has a large following across the country. It combines physical and mental agility and coordination, and social interaction. The music for many of the dances sounds strange and intriguingly beautiful to our ears, produced by unusual instruments and in odd rhythms. The Cullowhee group meets at the Presbyterian Student Center every Monday night at 7 pm. After the workshop the group, may select another night more convenient to more people. This workshop is sponsored by The Cullowhee International Folk Dance Group and Last Minute Productions. For more information call, Laurel at 586-9523 or Brenda at 586-8225.
