  • Sports 6 Western Carolinian/November 4, 1982 Conference Race Tightens Up Cats Clobber UT-C As Defense Shines Ihe Southern Conference football championship race tightened up with the results of last Saturday's games as live teams enter the last three weeks of the season with a chance to win the big trophy and join the NCAA's Division 1-AA playoff field, Western Carolina and Ihe Citadel, two of the Chasers of fust place Eurman, will go head to head this Saturdav afternoon in Cullowhee and one team will be eliminated (barring a tie) from the stretch run. Western, now 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. solidified its position in the race with a stunning 20-0 upset ol I I-Chattanooga. I he Citadel, 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, got back in the race with a 24-7 win over Marshall. The Bulldogs are still in the race with two losses as thev plav seven league games compared to only six by Western and 1IC and will meet league leading Eurman (4- I (November 20. "Ihev (Ihe Citadel) are playing for the championship and we are playing for the championship and that should make for a whale ofa football game,"said Bob Waters. Western's veteran head football coach, who claimed his 80th win last Saturday night. "Plus," he said, "outside of Eurman, Ihe Citadel has given us the most trouble in the Southern Conference. 1 hey have beaten us the last three seasons and you can bet all out players will be aware of this before the week is over." A breakdown of the conference championship race Cross Country Championship In Cullowhee The 1982 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship will be run this Saturday, Nov. 6, on the campus of Western Carolina University WCU will be hosting a Southern Conference championship event for the first time since the school joined the league in 1977. The 10.000 meter course will be set on the WCU campus starting on the tract near the lower tennis courts below Reid Gym. Ihe competition will begin at 10a.m. Nine Southern Conference teams will compete in the 30th annual championships that will determine teamand individual titlists in the conference. East lennessee State University comes into the event as a favorite to capture its fifth straight league title. Last season East Tennessee State swept the top five individual finishers and won handily over Appalachian State and V.M.I, in the event held in Huntington. West Virginia. East season Western Carolina placed seventh in the nine-team field. There is no admission charge to the cross country championships. The event will preceed WCU's last home football game and crucial Southern Conference matchup with The Citadel at I pm at E.J. Whitmire Stadium. All students are encouraged to come out to Saturday's big run and support the WCU Cross Country runners. Lady Cat Of The Week by Karen Ashe Saundra Eleming. a dynamic woman from Charleston. S.C. is this week's featured lady Cat Volleyball team player. Eleming. a junior, came to WCU from Chicora High School. During her freshman year at Chicora. Fleming played basketball, volleyball and track. However, her interest in sports began early in life while playing basketball with the guys in the neighborhood. Eleming fell in love with the Western North Carolina mountains and decided to get her fill of the mountains here at WCU. The radio and television major is also heavily involved in WCU's Inspirational Choir, OES (Organization of Ebony Students) is an Alpha Phi Alpha Yellow Rose and is involved in East Minute Productions. Eventually, after "praying to graduate from WCU." Eleming hopes to enter the U.S. Air Force. Fleming plays only volleyball here at WCU. however, she does participate in the intramural program. Eleming calls hcrselt "a winner 1 love to win, and I like to make friends. I am very serious about everything I do and I do try to keep a positive attitude." When speaking of the 1982 lady Cat team Fleming proclaimed. "I love this year. I feel as if we can go a lot further." At the 1982 College of Charleston Tournament, in which WCl was the victor. Fleming's family and friends were present. During her sophomore year Eleming was all-state and was voted a 1981 all-star along with Judy Green. Ronnie Mison, Dean Biasucci and a developing offensive line were taking advantage of what was offered them. James rushed for 91 yards and scored twice, running his total to 12 IDs. The offensive line, which had three rookie starting, did not allow quarterback Mixon to be touched as he completed II of 20 passes and tipped his passing yardage total to 1644 yards. Biasucci kicked a pair of 39 yard field goals, pushing his season total to 13, a new WCT season record. " I his week's game is now the most important game of the season as was last week's," said Waters. The official season opener for Western Carolina University's men's basketball team is more than three weeks into the future, but Coach Steve Cottrell's team will get an early unofficial test in less than two weeks. Cottrell's sixth edition will be unveiled a week from next Tuesday (Nov. 16) when they meet the touring Marathon Oil team, an AAU power, in Reid Gymnasium for an exhibition game. Cottrell's remodeling program is well underway as the '82-'83 Catamounts completed their second week of pre-season practice last Friday. The official season opener is scheduled for November 27 in Reid Gymnasium when The Cats host Emory and Henry College of Virginia. After the home opener, they face a grueling three-game week that will take them to Raleigh to face N.C. State (Nov. 29), Columbia to meet South Carolina (Dec. ljand Nashville. Tennessee for a first ever game with Vanderbih (Dec. 4). Cottrell and his assistants. Rick Miller and Dan Kenney, are in the process of attempting to replace three all-star performers who produced 45 points a game last season. Three-time All-Southern Conference selection Greg Dennis and point guard Kevin Young, a three-year starter, were seniors last season while Ronnie Carr. the conference's leading scorer last season and a pre-season All-American candidate, was involved in an automobile accident last summer and prematurely ended his playing career, Despite the staggering personnel losses. Cottrell is anything but down when talking about this season's team. "We have a lot of talented, capable players who have been anxiously awaiting the challenge of fighting for a starting spot and it is definitely competitive in our practices," said Cottrell. Currently, nine returning lettermen are fighting for the starting spots, along with a junior college transfer and two freshman recruits. Cedric Cokely. a Southern Conference All- Freshman team selection last season; veteran forward Kenny Trimier, the Cats' leading rebounder for the past three seasons; Pat Sharp, an outstanding shooting forward; lightning quick point guard Quentin Moore; and very talented guard Quinton Lytle are the leaders among the veterans.
