  • Western Carolinian/November 4, 1982 9 m BKCCHUS sh Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning The Health of University Students BACCHUS is a student organization designed to encourage responsible drinking behavior within the campus and community; to work to alleviate problems of alcohol abuse; to educate and inform students, faculty and administration about alcohol use and abuse; to facilitate healthy alternatives to alcohol abuse; and to enhance communication within the campus community regarding alcohol related matters. In addition, by creating awareness of the effects of alcohol on both the body and the mind, BACCHUS works to help individuals make decisions about the responsible use or non-use of alcohol and to help people feel comfortable with the decisions they have made. The BACCUS philosophy is: Keep in mind that drinking should not be the focus of any activity. Recognize another's right to drink or not to drink. Avoid encouraging or reinforcing irresponsible behavior. Remember that the right to drink is limited by society through laws governing drinking and driving, minimum drinking ages, etc. and to respect these laws. There are 66 BACCHUS Chapters located in 29 states and Canada. Western Carolina University was the first Chapter in North Carolina, founded in July, 1982. The only other chapter in N.C. is at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. WCU's BACCHUS Chapter has sponsored the following activities this year: A representative for Homecoming Court- and a car in the parade. Ten members of BACCHUS will attend the second annual BACCHUS General Assembly in St. Louis, November 10-13. BACCHUS will also help promote the Great American Escape and have a booth in it. International Alcohol Awareness Week, including an Open House for the Campus Alcohol Information Center, the movie "Days of Wine and Roses," alcohol related programs in the residence halls and displays in the cafeterias.
