Soccer Team Returns by Steve Crawford This Saturday, September 4, Western Carolina's soccer team will begin their 1982 season in a match with Central Wesleyan College at 3 p.m. in E.J. Whitmire Stadium. This year's team has a difficult job ahead in trying to equal the 1981 soccer Cats' excitement and close matches. Last year, under first year head coach Hugh Jones, the Catamounts had four matches decided by one goal margins and ended the season with a 7-7-3 record. Wins against VMI, East Tennessee State, and UT-Chatanooga earned them a 3-3-2 record and fifth place in the Southern Conference. Taking nearly every match down to the final minutes, the Cats outscored opponents 33-32 on the season and put in good performances in losses to national powerhouses Alabama A&M (4-0) and Appalachian State (5-2). Jones hopes for the same kind of effort from the 1982 soccer Cats. Although fourteen letterwinners return, the Catamounts will miss last year's top scorer, Taylor Warner (13 goals and 5 assists), and two All Southern Conference players, Paul Garth and Karl Witzke. These graduation losses, however, may be offset by several newcomers with impressive reputations. Freshmen Karl Wilson from Kingston, Jamaica, and junior transfer Vernon Paiker, a native of South Africa, are both highly regarded. Other new faces include Nigerian Neeife Ukabam and John Davies from Panama. Also adding to the incoming talent are two other freshmen—defender Dereck Prickett from Miami. Florida, and striker Neil Lewis from Greensboro, North Carolina. The Cats' returnees are headed by seniors Tim Barnstable (striker). Gooff Foltz (striker), Neil Goodman (striker), David Parrish (midfield), Moe Rowell (midfield), and Steve Kosto (defender). Returning juniors are defenders John Bradshawand John Starling, midfielder Scott Lambert, and goalie standout Trent Faulkner. Faulkner leads a defense that was a strong point for the team last year. Faulkner's back-up, freshman goalie Elliot Pratt, suffered a broken collarbone in a preseason, intrasquad scrimmage last Sunday, leaving Faulkner as the team's sole goalie. As a result, junior midfielder Tom Mudano may see some action as goalie this season. Other letterwinners returning include sophomores Danny Cowan (defender), Stephen Moore (midfield), Roger Lambert (striker), and David Crocker (defender). Rounding out the 25-man roster are junior Scott Hinricks (defender) and sophomore Doug Finley (defender). This year's schedule will be one of the toughest ever for the Cats. The opener against Central Wesleyan, a good NAIA District 6 team, will be here Saturday at 3 p.m. Western wil host UNC—Charlotte September 7 at 7 p.m. The Catamounts' schedule will include seven conference matches, highlighted by a visit from Appalachian State on November 7. The team will also play NAIA power USC-Spartanburg and, for the first time ever, Tennessee. One of our champion cheerleaders, no doubt photo by Mark Haskett ♦ * .,.../ 982 Cheerleaders ♦ Western Carolina University's 1982 football cheerleaders have yet to lead a cheer for the Catamount team this season.
