  • Western Carolinian/August 24, 1982 .17 Fraternities A fraternity is an association ot men mutually selected ir college days, because of their belief in adherance to common ideals and aspirations Out of their association arises a personal relationship that makes them unselfishly seek to advance one another in the arts of life, and to add to the norma; curriculum, the culture and character that are required by cc with great personalities or when admitted to partnership in great traditions A fraternity, too, is of such character that, after people have left college, they delight to renew their youth by continued assoc with it and to bring back their richest experiences to the younger generation in part payment for what they feel themselves to owe to the fraternity for what ii gave them in their formative years PLEDGING: The Presidents Council operates and supervises open rush Any entering freshman or transfer as well as all other undergraduate males are eligible to be rushed and pledged by a fraternity In order to pledge a fraternity a sludent must abide by Council Rush Regulations. To be eligible for initiation a student must be regularly enrolled and have attained at least an overall QPR of 2.00 Presidents Council The Presidents Council is the governing body of the nine Greek letter social fraternities at WCU It is composed of the president from each fraternity The Council serves as a forum for discussion of common problems, works to strengthen the Greek system, supports and promotes social activities for all WCU students, and seeks to provide support and aid to all areas of the University Alpha Phi Alpha, Nu Zeta Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithica, NY by a group of students who desired to maintain a more intimate contact with one another than the classroom study permitted Thus, being the first predominately black fraternity their ideals are high, as they continue to promote brotherhood, scholarship, and high moral character among their members. Their colors are black and old gold and they are "Servants ot All '' Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Omlcron Chapter Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity was founded December 10. 1899. as a cooperative movement of the students from the City College ot New York University Delta Omicron affiliated nationally in December of 1959 Delta Sig ranks among the top 20 fraternities in membership as well as number ot chapters The two major social functions are Carnation Ball and Shipwreck They are nationally known as the Fraternity of Engineered Leadership Kappa Alpha, Delta Alpha Chapter Living up to the ideals of Robert E. Christian manhood, and citizenship The "Pi Kapps were founded nationally on December 10, 1904 at the College of Charleston in Charleston South Carolina, and chartered locally in January. 1967 Known as the "Friendly Fraternity their activities include intramural sports, an annual Rose Bali, Rat Fink Ball as well as numerous chanty drives Phi Lambda Phi Fraternity, Omega Zeta Chapter Pi Lambda Phi was founded locally on January 28, 1978. Being the newest social fraternity on campus, we bring in many new ideas to enlighten the Greek system at Western The "Pilams" strive for high scholarship, contributing to many charitable events and above all feel that their closeness in brotherhood is their main quality in the fraternity Pi Lambda Phi was founded at Yale University on March 21.1895 The Phiiams are proud to be recipients of the Presidents Council Scholarship Trophy for the 1979-80 academic year Tau Kappa Epsilon, Zeta Omicron Chapter A college fraternity such as TKE. is a select group of men with similar ideals, hopes and purposes bonded together by deep friendship and mutual understanding Tau Kappa Epsilon has a spirit of genuine democracy and chooses its members "not for wealth rank, or honor, but for personal worth and character." Tau Kappa Epsilon, "the fraternity ot life." was founded at Illinois Wesleyan University on January 10. 1899 Theta XI, Kappa Phi Chapter The purpose ot Theta Xi Fraternity, is to provide a university home environment for its active members in which fellowship and alumni guidance leads to wholesome mental, moral, physical and spiritual growth It was founded at Renselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, on April 29, 1864 Residence Halls DELTA SIGMA PHI Fraternity invites all eligible men to attend Formal Rush Student Activities Cultural Activities Concerts and Lectures An outstanding array of concert artists and nationally known lectures is presented each year for the enjoyment and cultural development of Western Carolina students by a committee composed of faculty members and students. Albright-Benton Hall 400 bed men's hall, walk up with community baths. Two buildings connected by a common lobby area. Each of the 4 floors in each building is made up of 52 persons Harrill Hall Leather-wood Hall 400 bed ma ly batns each c floors is comprised of 4 wings Reynolds Hall (Men-capacity 300) Reynolds is a tnree s:c. -sproximateiy 100 stu dents living on each floor A bath is shared by every two rooms and a large central lounge is located on each floor Reyr located on the hill in the older part of campus Parking fa are available for upperciassmen adiacent to the Robertson Hall A 42 apartment complex for married students 37 of the apartments are efficiencies All apartments are furnished and rent includes utilities Meals University Food Service provides two cafeterias - Brown and Dodson Students may eat their meals in either cafeteria Students living "alls are required to take part in either the 15 eai boarding plan Other students may purchase one of several plans available m addition to the 15 or 21 meal plan As id restaurant are operated m the University Cen ter Residence Halls Coordinating Council The purpose of the Residence Halls Coordinating Council is to provide the students residing m the University Residence Halls a means to voice their wishes and opinions through their elected officials within their living environments Special Interest Halls Special Interest Halls are made available to students who desire a particular lifestyle in a residential community at Western Particular programs available are: Quiet Lifestyle Floors The following Quiet Lifestyle Floors have been established with an emphasis on a study environment Buchanan 2nd Floor North Reynolds 1st Floor North - Helder 4th Floor West Wing Scott 6th Floor West Wing - Leatherwood 4th Floor East Wing These living environments exist as an alternative lifestyle and as such are a controlled environment These floors are responsive to individuals willing to show extra courtesy and respect for their neighbors as an outgrowth of mutual needs for a more subdued atmosphere conductive to sleep and study GUIDELINES: HOURS. Quiet hours 24 hours per day Sunday through Friday at 5:00 PM Stereos, televisions, radios, etc , shall be played at a reasonable level with the door closed so as not to disturb other residents Special Events Homecoming Week Probably the most exciting event is Homecoming at Western Carolina. Alumni come back to see the Catamounts grid clash and to revive old friendships Organizations create colorful displays on the campus and compete for prizes. The game is held m the stadium in the afternoon and is preceeded by other festivities University Theatre Productions The Little Theatre presents productions throughout the year. Admissions are $2 00 for non-students. $1 00 for students, and 50c for children. Reserved seat tickets may be picked up one week before production at the ticket booth in Stillwell building. Mountain Heritage Day Held in the fall, it is a day dedicated to preserving the mountain crafts and recreational activities ot the past Booths featuring such items as wood carving, baked goods, needle work are open and regional craftsmen participate in shingle splitting, horseshoeing, wool dying, weaving and other activities Mountain music and dancing are included in this all- day get together
