  • Western Carolinian/August 24, 1982 .22. a The Beastmaster"-Conan Repeat film all too obviously predecessor, but "The almost too closely. The by Darrell Beck It is an inescapable fact that, once a film becomes a box office success, it will spawn a series of imitators. So is the case with this summer's adventure film "Conan the Barbarian". Its most recent and noteable imitator is MGM's "The Beastmaster." Not only is the MGM following the success of its Beastmaker" mimics "Conan' newer film rehashes several plot elements which were clinched enough in Conan; their repetition simply serves to remind the movie-goer that he's seen them all before. Essentially, "The Beastmaker" is nothing more than "Conan" with different characters and plot twists. However, the new film's main element, the title character's ability to communicate with animals and "manipulate" them, gives the film an identity of its own. The Beastmaker's friendship with a falcon, a panther, and a couple of thieving weasels manages to bring out the animal lover in all of us. In roles ranging to warriors in battle to agents for comic relief, the lovable creatures almost steal the show. Fortunately, the human performers are charismatic enough to sustain the audience's interest. Young actor Marc Singer is cast as the Beastmaster, who goes on a vengeful crusade against the enemy tribe that wiped out his people. Singer is a talented, likeable personality who displays a wry sense of humor and a real closeness with the animals. Tanya Roberts, the last of the late, great "Charlies Angels" shows off her obvious physical assets and charms as Kiri, the girl the Beastmaster falls in love with. In addition, though, she also shows intelligence, spunk, and a small but interesting amount of combat skill; males in the audience will greatly enjoy her performance. Veteran actor Rip Torn appears as the film's villain, giving an almost stereotypical portrayal in the process. There is no indication of reality in Tom's character, but apparently it was not intended anyway. John Amos, formerly of the TV comedy "Good Times", plays a wandering warrior who teams up with the Beastmaster. Amos's performance shows us a strong, fearsome character who is also likeable and somewhat humerous. If you enjoy the likes ot '"Conan", then you won't be disappointed by "The Beastmaster". However, you may be disappointed if you expect anything else; the film settled for being what it is without considering how much more it could have been.
