Catawba quarterback SonnyL Butler fumbled and Catamount | May Be Pushed Aside Tonight Pirates Block Door '< To Cats" Title Hopes CULLOWHEE, Oct. 14-Whether Western Carolina's Catamounts main in contention for the North State Conference football crown hinges largely on tomorrow night' homecoming game with the East Carolina Pirates. Coach Tom Young's Catamounts undefeated in conference play, have only a 7-7 tie with East Tennessee State marring their loop record. They knocked off Appalachia 7-6, and last week disposed of previously underated Catawba. 20-6. They need a win tomorro night to keep pace with Lenoir Rhyne's Bears, unbeaten and un tied, in circuit competition. Young reported his charges "in good shape" both physically I and mentalry for the battle with the Pirates. He plans to start Jack (Lard) ; Cunningham and Terry Swanger; t at ends, Hubert Edwards and Bill McElrath at tackles, Bobby Kuy-| kendall and Bob Setzer or Jon : Carswell at guards and Mickey 1 Byrd at center. ' The backfield probably will be! • Tommy Lewis at quarterback, I Jack Hendris and Charlie Poin-I dexter at halfbacks and Carroll Swanger or Pat Patillo at fuli-l back. East Carolina, billed as the j toughest aerial foe in the conference, is paced by quarterback Dick Cherry. I Young claims Cherry is the most 'Ttetanding passer the conference; ever known. He rates him, ( Roger Thrift, who passed j *""' 5 over the Catamount WCC Preps For ECC Injured Farmer Out For Season By BILL GLANCE Citizen Sports Writer CULOWHEE, Oct. 10—Bad news reached the Catamount camp here this afternoon shortly after the Western Carolina College football team passed the halfway mark in its campaign for the North State Conference championship. The message: Quarterback Chuck Farmer, who missed last Saturday night's game with Catawba because of a knee injury, will be out of action for the remainder of the sea- Farmer's physician described the _ injury as a torn ligament on i inside of the knee. The Candler athlete, who two years ago was selected the most outstanding player in the Optimist| Bowl game in Asheville, will be sorely missed by Coach Tom Young's Catamounts. SHARED QB DUTIES He had shared the quarterback- ing duties with Tommy Lewis until the latter part of the game with East Tennessee State two weeks ago when Farmer reinjured his This will leave us shallow at the quarterback spot, Coach Young said. Only two junior varsity players are left to understudy Lewis. They are Kenny Woods of Swanna- noa and Sammy White of Murphy. White is a freshman. Both Woods and White have ._ a long way his season, Young said, and may be called on for action here Saturday night when the Catamounts meet East Carolina's Pirates in their homecoming attraction. CLEARED 3 OBSTACLES The Catamounts have cleared three consecutive obstacles on their road to the championship. They nipped Appalachian's Mountaineers, 7-6, and tied East Tenn., 7-7. Last week they romped over the Catawba Indians, 20-6. But they can't afford to rest now. Three more toughies are in their way. They catch East Carolina Saturday night. Lenoir Rhyne, which dumped Appalachian last week to remain undefeated and at the top of the North State Conference heap, is scheduled the following week. Both of these games will be played on the Cullowhee field. The Catamounts will then take the road to do battle with the Elont Christians. If they can «et by these threel ^tumbling blocks, they will have the championship sewed up. Young isn't counting any chickens before they hatch, however. He's pointing toward the East Carolina game and he promises the Catamounts a heavy week of preparation for that m. The Catamount regulars were given the day off today after light workouts, in order that they might recuperate from bruises sustainer1- in the game with Catawba. No seri ous injuries were suffered ;n lh?" game and the Catamounts apparently will be fully ready to go next Saturday night. , i
