  • Cats'Tuttle Hurt; Team Plays Today CULLOWHEE, May 6—Western Carolina's Catamounts lost more than two ball games last weekend when they met Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory. Larry Tuttle, Catamounts regular second baseman and a sparkplug afield, was hit on the head by a double play ball in Friday's game and suffered a i brain concussion. ' Tuttle, going to second base, ' was hit by a ball thrown by the Lenoir Rhyne shortstop who was attempting to execute a double play. The Western Carolina second- sacker probably will be sidelined i for the remainder of the season, i His injury comes as a blow to the Catamounts who play host to Guilford tomorrow and Tuesday. Coach Jim Gudger plans to move third baseman Nookie McCrary to second base to fill the gap. ! First baseman Ronnie Swartzel I will be moved to third and Charlie Stallings will take over the first base chores. Lefty Jim Pardue will start on the mound tomorrow as the Catamounts attempt to regain the North State Conference lead they lost in bowing twice to Lenoir Rhyne. Catamounts Lead Conference Weather No Handicap To Western Carolina GREENSBORO. April 15 Iffl - 'Western Carolina's Catamounts, [who usually find the early season |going difficult because of the cool ■Cullowhee climate, have found the iweather no handicap this spring. With the season just under'way, the Catamounts have jumped into a quick lead in the North State Conference baseball race, picking up where they left off as Western Division champions a year ago. At the moment, the Cats have a 3-0 record, having beaten two highly regarded challengers. Elon fell before the Catamounts twice, and Saturday Western Carolina handed Catawba its first loss of the season 7-5. Catawba continues the surprising leadership of Western teams on a 2-1 record in the young East Carolina, which won the crown in last year's split campaign haayet to play a conference game The Pirates were rained out in a scheduled meeting with Atlantic Christian this past week. Action picks up during the com ing week with 10 conference games on schedule. East Carolina tries once again to get into action, and Appalachian makes its debut. In a pair of feature tilts, Weston Carolina is at East Carolina Friday and Saturday in a rematch of the two clubs which played for ist year's championship.
