  • It is the movement from the growl, the snort, or the expletive, to the mathematical formula or the narrative sentence. It is marked by the decline of the exclamation point. The rise of exposition, of communi- cation, then, marks a vast increase in the range of what can be communicated the geographic and chronological range of those to whom it can be communicated. At the same time it marks a movement from the yelp of pain or the scream of rage to sounds and symbols that may be of greater substantive interest to people in other times and other places. This means, too, a shift of focus from the self, from the expression of emotions in gesture and voice, to the carrying of messages of facts and ideas, or even of feelings. This is a very old story. But the point which is relevant to the condition of our nation today, and of universities es- pecially, is that in modern times, and es- pecially in a democratic society, decency and progress depend on the willingness of people to forego whatever sense of release or catharsis might come from the screamed expletive or the personal yelp in favor of other forms of sounds and symbols. Representative institutions, of all insti- tutions, depend most on the willingness of people to inhibit their animal emotions and to talk with respect to others. Those coun- tries in which representative assemblies have been marked by the throwing of ink- wells, the shouting of libels and curses, and the punching of noses have been the countries where representative govern- ment has been most fragile and most er- ratic; while those like Great Britain, where the representative assembly has been marked by a certain inhibition, a certain
