Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2015-07-18
-
The show begins with Amy’s story “You Don’t Mess With an Angry Mother” recalling when she returned to work after having her daughter as well as some memories of learning to cook and dance in the Mexican way. “Let My Life” by Mountain Faith follows the story. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is once again Richard Hurley. They discuss Doreyl’s mural of Shindig on the Green. Richard reads a poem he wrote about Bascom Lamar Lunsford. “Shindig on the Green” by Richard Hurley follows the interview. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy interviews Mick Lewis of Sylva. Mick shares some history of the Lewis family and some memories of hunting and fishing with his father. Mick started his business, Lewis Carpets, in 1987, and all four of his sons work there. Keith Shuler’s “Smoky Mountain Days” follows the segment. Shawn Crowe continues with part 3 of the Cherokee legend of Selu and Kanati on Stories of the Cherokee. Part 3 teaches why Cherokee men had to learn how to make bows and arrows, and why they had to hunt for their food. The legend of Selu and Kanati is told in Cherokee today. Music by Matthew Tooni. A tribute to Jack Wood is broadcast in a reprisal of the October 25, 2014 program on Down Another Road. Judy talked once again with Jack Wood who shared some stories from his childhood in Caney Fork and talked briefly about his work in Charlotte as a teacher and principal. The interview was followed by “Maybe” by the Muses. The show closes with “Grace” by The Children of Zion.
