Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2014-05-24

  • Amy begins the show with “The Cry of a Painter (Panther),” in which she shares some stories and legends about panthers in the mountains. Keith Shuler’s “Painter Eyes” follows the story. On Creative Corner, Doreyl talks with Carley Arrowood, a 17-year old fiddler who is playing Shindig on the Green in Asheville this summer. She talks about how she started playing the fiddle and some of her recent and upcoming performances. After the interview she plays “Fisher’s Hornpipe.” Amy’s guest on Stories of Mountain Folk is Stedman Mitchell of Cullowhee. The interview is in honor of Western Carolina University’s 125th anniversary, and he talks about his experiences as a farmer and his time working in buildings and grounds and food service for Western Carolina in the late 1940s. “The Old Mountaineer” by Mountain Faith follows the interview. On Stories of the Cherokee, Shawn shares part 1 (of 3) of a dramatized adaptation of the Cherokee story “Why Possum’s Tail is Bare.” The play features members of the Cherokee Boys Club’s Youth in Radio program. Flute music by Matthew Tooni accompanies Shawn’s introduction and closing statement. On Down Another Road, Judy talks again with Martin Cook, the founder of the Inspirations. He shares the stories behind some well-known gospel songs, including “Beulah Land,” “Farther Along,” “Two Shoes,” “Look What I’m Trading for a Mansion,” and “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” which follows the interview in a performance by the Inspirations. The show closes with “Billy Sipes” by the Hominy Valley Boys.
