Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2013-09-28
-
The show begins with Amy’s story “A Coconut Mountain,” which is about baking a coconut cake for her father when she was nine years old. “To the Lamb” by David Bauer accompanies the story. On Creative Corner, Doreyl’s guest is George Frizzell of Sylva. They talk about the importance of preserving local history, with a particular focus on the history of Dillsboro. They also talk about the mural of Dillsboro that Doreyl has painted and that will be unveiled at ColorFest. “Grandpa” by Henry Queen follows the interview. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy talks with Jean Frady of Tuckasegee. She talks about her childhood in Macon County and coming to live in Tuckasegee. She also talks about going to work at the nuclear research laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, when she was a teenager. The interview is followed by “Home Sweet Home.” On Coming Around the Mountain, Sean talks with Adam Bigelow, the manager of the Cullowhee Community Garden. He talks about the garden itself and how working with the garden has allowed him to combine his interests in horticulture and community. “All the Love We’ve Missed” by Kathy Collins Barber follows the interview. On Down Another Road, an interview with Kelly Banner from March 16, 2013, is rebroadcast, in which Kelly tells a story about a special chicken named “Big Red.” The interview is followed by “Chickens” by C.W. Colt, and the show closes with “Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes” by David Grisman.
