Rollins 1 an this day sending you printed matter containing the reasons, as advocated by our Association, 'why the ftovernment sho.Mdeestablish a Forest Reserve in the Southern Appalachian mountains. You probably have seen these reasons in print before and for your convenience 1 have marked the margins with blue pencil which cover th- points us above named. Maj . Rollins only this morning informed me that you uted this material and hod to have it at once or 1 would have taken great pleasure in preparin/t you a typewritten co*>y for your inspection. Mr. Howl and informed me last evening that he haft sent one of his r^-orters to Speaker Henderson and that Mr, Henderson had informed htm (the reporter) that he (Speaker Henderson) would adso- lutely not listen to the Park matter being brought up at this short session of Congress, He gave us his reason that there are so many important patters still to be settled that this would have to go over and, while he himself favored the movement, he nevertheless, wanted it to be understood that he expressed himself as above noted. T have this d a'it ten to Mr, Pearson and Mr, Richards what Mr. Mowland told me, thinking that it voulri be with your approval, If the printed matter 1 am enclosing is not available for the news syndicate, 1 will undert : I to have an article prepared if you will nitify me at once. Various organizations and individuals expressed support of an Appalachian National Park and a bill before Congress authorizing the purchase of four million acres for that purpose. A movement for a national park in the Appalachians was spearheaded by Appalachian National Park Association, formed in 1899. The association raised public awareness of the issue, but disbanded before the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
