Program of hikes for 1930/ Smoky Mountains Hiking Club

Included in the list of mountains which have been so placed that we may see them from the Round Top are the following more or less famous peaks of the Great Smokies: Cove Mountain, Mt. LeConte, Mt. Collins, Clingman's Dome, Siler's Bald, Briar Knob, Thunderhead, The Sugarlands, Blanket Mountain, Meig's Mountain, Miry Ridge and Chilhowee Mountain. This trip should give our photographic members more than the usual opportunity for permanent views, especially since it has been set at the season when there is no dense foliage to obstruct the eagle-eye of the camera. Besides your camera, your appreciative eye and other necessary equipment, it will be deemed most expedient to carry along some food such as you might wi»h for a luncheon meal up in, or at least very near, the skies. LeCONTE, VIA RAINBOW FALLS, AND DOWN ROARING FORK* The trail leading to the summit of Mt. LeConte by way of Rainbow Falls, is probably more familiar to hikers than any of the other Smoky Mountain trails. The distance from Gatlinburg to the summit of the mountain is eight miles, but most of our modern hikers, who would rather read about Daniel Boone than try to impersonate him, rejoice over the fact that four of these eight miles can be made by auto. After leaving "The Orchard" the trail follows LeConte creek to within a few hundred yards from the top where it turns off to the left of the stream, and ends abruptly in a clearing occupied by the cabins. Rainbow Falls, which is considered the half-way point, is reached •While this is a very fine hike, it is a hard one. Another hike, an easy one-day trip, is scheduled for this same weekend. In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1930 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
