Approximately 35 miles of the State line is in plain view. A total area of about 100,- 000 acres is overlooked from the tower. Clingman's Dome, Siler's Bald and Thunderhead stand out prominently on the State line horizon. Defeat Ridge, Cades Cove, Chilhowee mountain, Townsend, Wear's Cove, Cove mountain, Gatlinburg, Sugarland mountain and Mt. LeConte are all visible. When a fire occurs, the lookout-man on the tower checks its location with the help of the field- glasses, reports the fire by 'phone to the District Patrolman at Elkmont or Tremont, who calls out; the previously organized crews, who suppress the fire. Through the quick action on fires, the area burned over is greatly reduced. This is the aim of the protective system—Fires of very small area.
