My dear Doctor:- Under separate cove& we are this day mailing you a copy of the petition from the Appalachian National Parte Association to the Seriate of the United States, No doubt yoti are already familiar with the objects of this Association, if not, allow me to state briefly that our Association was organized last November by representative men all over fche Eastern and Southern states for the purpose of interesting the Government toward the establishment of a N National Park and Forest Reserve in the Southern Appalachian mountains. As you are well aware the Southern Appalachaln mountains are now looked upon as one of the most popular health resorts in the whole country and in this region the finest virgin forests to be found anyvAiere in the United States is still practocably untouched. Land can be bought here now at the insignificant sum of one dollar and a half and two dollars per acre, in a region unsurpassed either in scenery, healthfullness or climate. This region moreover, acts as a reservoir to the headwaters of all the streams flowing to the Atlantic and Mississ -ippi basin and if some effort is not made to preserve at least a portion of the forests of these head-waters of the
