  • My Mother is a very proud lady in many respects, but mainly she is proud of being black. She has instilled in me a willingness to stand up and be proud of what I am. Mainly she has taught me how to love. I have three brothers and one sister, but Mother manages to give us all the love, patience, and time we need. We love her for it, and when she punishes us, we realize it is because we deserve it. We have always known that she would be there to protect us if Necessary. My Mother is the chief molder of my personality. From her I absorb patterns of living with others and the desire to adjust. My personality is colored by my close associates with my family attitudes, view points, standards ideals, habits, mannerisms, interests, and feelings about myself. Mother once read this poem to me. 'A child who lives with criticism learns to fight. Ach Ach Ach Ach Ach Ach Ach Ach Ach love Id who lives with ridicule learns to be shy. Id who lives with jealously learns to feel guilty. Id who lives with tolerence learns to be patient. Id who lives with encouragement learns confidence. Id who lives with praise learns to appreciate, Id who lives with fairness learns justice. Id who lives with security learns to have faith. Id who lives with approval learns to like himself. Id who lives with acceptance and friendship learns to find n the world." Mother has also taught me the importance of going to church. She has taught me many things about the Bible, and that worshipping God was important to her. When I was little, I remember her teaching me the Lord's Praver everv night. I've always had confidence in mv mother, and I will never lose faith in her. I love my Mother because she helps me to make the lumber of my life not a tavern but a Temple, and the words of my everyday not a reproach, but a song. Mother used to tell me about the old days; how times were bad when her father was young. In trying to visualize some of the captive moments, I still did not know until "Roots" appeared on television. "Roots" Made me even prouder to be black. "Roots" became an inspiration to me. It hurt to see blacks mistreated, but there was nothing to be done then, until Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. helped his people gain their freedom and Civil Rights through nonviolence. He gave them strength and courage throughout each day of torments and tragedies. People mourn over his death, but he gave us the strength to help ourselves toward the future. King also taught us to love.
