  • In this letter of October 7, 1946, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) writes his mother, Laura Kephart to update her on his life. He tells her he got a raise when he returned form travelling for work and is passing it on to her. He says that Ralph has just invited him to come listen the Firestone Hour, and that Ralph and Jane had a fine time visiting with Gran-mama Kephart as Dicky calls her, and they are ready to move out into a place of their own. He is relieved to hear that Cornelia is doing better, and mentions that he has not seen George or his family since they moved to Chicago.
  • October 7, 1946 Dear Mama, I returned last week from another long trip South and am in, I hope, for the winter - aside from short trips. I left Washington immediately after we returned from Ithaca and scare- ly stopped to take my breath until I came home. Thats getting pretty strenuous for a guy 54 years old. However I also came back to a slight raise in pay so maybe it pays to travel. I’m passing on the percentage to you and hope that I can keep it up. My delight was slightly dampened today when I went downtown to try to buy a suit of clothes. In all of Washington I could find only one ready-made my size and that was a double-breasted affair at $65.00. That’s more than I expected ever to pay for a suit of clothes and I’m not the double-breasted type. So I’ll have to settle for an old suit for the winter. Ralph called me just now to come down and listen to the Firestone Hour with the new Irish tenor, John McCormick’s protege, Christopher Lynch. It was really pretty fine so if you are still interested in John MCormick [sic] this is the nearest thing to him that I have heard. He sang “Believe me if all those endearing young charms” and Then you’ll remember me” - two of the best. He is one the air on alternate Mondays at 8.30. I’ve never written to Aunt Julia to thank her her her fine hospital- ity to me and the children. I hope Mary Ann has written and I will soon. We had a wonderful time. It was my first vacation in many years. Now that the war is over I hope we can take time to really spend some time in Ithaca. I’d rather spend a vacation there than any place in the United States and not only because its my home town. Its just a lovely place. Buddy and Mary Ann were entranced with it in fact Buddy always has been and both think “Daddy’s rela- tives” are tops. And they really are. I’ve scarcely had a chance to talk to Jane and Ralph since I got back but they, too, had a fine time. Dicky still talks about “Gran-mama Kephart.” He has a hard time with the last name but he knows who Gran-mama is all right. Jane and Ralph are trying to find a house to rent and I suppose they will move out one of these days. I cnat [sic] blame them as its been pretty crowded for them for nearly two years now and they want their own places and their own things. But it will be tough on us when they go. We had a note from Lucy saying that Cornelia was much better. I hope it really means that she is out of trouble. I was afraid for awhile that she was in serious condition. I must write to her right away. I have not seen George and his family since they first moved to Chi- cago. Ordinarily I go through Chicago once or twice a year but lately all my work has been in the other direction. That’s the way it goes. Love t
