  • Jacksonville, N.Y. July 25, 1943 Dear Leonard- The enclosed letter from Barbara was not the shock to me that I’m afraid it will be to you, for I saw the beginning of mother’s breakdown this spring when she was visiting here. I can not escape the horrible thought that she may be due to live on, as nannie & cousin Susie did, & can only pray, as she herself has always done, that she may find a quicker passing. If you should see her, as we all hope you can, this summer the chances are good that she will seem quite herself, but they are almost as good that she may refuse to speak to you, or throw some thing at you as she threw her travelling bag at Barbara! Just don’t let yourself be surprised or more disturbed than you can help, & remember that any little difficulty
