  • In this letter of October 12, 1947, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) writes his mother, Laura Kephart to update her on his work travels. He also tells her about George and Pauline moving to town and renting a house. They see each other about once a week. He tells her that Barbara is living with them and plans to go out to California where Jane is. Buddy is enjoying being his own boss and Leonard half jokes that he may go work for him some day soon. He ends by letting her know that he and George will take care of the man who wants to know about Abercrombie-Fitch.
  • October 12, 1947 Dear Mama, Ithought [sic] that I might get up to Ithaca to deliver this in person but after hanging fire for several weeks the deal fell through. There has been a lot of talk about the weed project expanding with some new funds that Congress made available and if so there was a chance that some of the money would be used at Ithaca. But other minds prevailed and the fund was cut so much that we cant do it. We do get some new work in the West but again the East is left out. So, once more I’ll be going to San Francisco instead of New York. The Tact is, I may get to Hawaii before the winter is out if the Secretary approves my accepting an invitation that I received just a few days ago from the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association to spend two weeks there as their guests in February. But its just a dream as yet. I cant report any very important news from here. The GSK’s arrived as expected about three weeks ago and are now settled in a fairly good and very expensive house down near Soldier’s Home. It was all could find to rent and we hope that the Rent Commission will reduce the rent before the folks go broke. I’d like to havehad [sic] them stay here but two women as strong minded as Frances and Pauline would certainly have tangled sooner or later so it just was not worth the risk. As it is we see them about once a week and remain friends. I’m bound to say that men get along bet- ter than women as a rule. At least they dont squabble over petty things and are more tolerant of personal traits. Next time I’m on earth I’ll try to have the whole thing neuter gender. Our household here is once more consisting of Frances, Barbara and I. Barbara expects to get her Teacher’s Certificate at Maryland University in February and then says that she wants to shake the dust of the East from her feet and go to California and make a new start. That’s all right as long as Jane and Ralph are there but that is for only nine months. After that she would find California a long way from home. I dont think Barabra is quite as dependant [sic] on home as Jane, neverthe [sic] less she gets plenty home- sick. Its one thing to go away when you know you are coming back at some definate [sic] time. But its something else to go away from home for good. I’m worried about Barbara. If she does not happen to find a man whom she could be happy with she may just drift. Agirl [sic] who has been married once finds it a little more difficult to make men friends of the right kind. I’m afraid she is beginning to realize that. I’d sure give a lot if that Jack business could be recalled but of course it cant. Buddy is still busy as a paperhanger with his hardware-feed business and seems happy at it. He, at least, does not have to answer to any boss and that’s been his main objective all his life. Its certainly the right thing to do if you can swing it. I’m having a taste of “bossism” myself right now. We got a new Division head about a year ago and he fancies himself as a tough guy - a whip-cracker. Most of us are older than he and with good reputations in our own right and dont relish that sort of thing. If I cant put up with it I’ll try to get retirement and get a new job. At present the Retirement Law is such that you almost have to wait until you are 60 to get the full benefits. However Congress may liberalize the law at the next session. If they do you will soon hear that I have finally left the Bureau after spending my whole life there. Right now I could get a pretty good job with some chemical company. Or I could go to work with or for Buddy. That would be just right. He needs an “agricultural man” as he says - someone who knows seeds, feeds etc. I dont know much but I know enough so you may get a letter some day on the letter head of Kephart and Father. I received the letter from the man who wants to know about Abercrombie- Fitch. George or I will take care of it.
