Jan. 7 1937 Dear Leonard. “May the new year be the key to unlock the door to all the things you hope for.” May you live many years to enjoy them. This is not a tangible gift, those, as usual, are beyond me. While money is desirable — up to a certain point is necessary in this civilized (?) life — there are many things more to be wished for. Last week this was brought home to me with emphasis.

In this letter of January 7, 1937, Laura Kephart writes to her son Leonard Kephart to wish him a happy birthday. She lets him know that she has gone to his sister Lucy’s house. She shares the news that Mrs. Brashear has died suddenly and all the bad luck that Mrs. Brashear’s son Jack and his wife have had in the past month. She tells him about her Christmas and that his letter to her made her proud. She informs him that his sister Margaret has taken a new job and is now working for the state at a T. B. clinic. She gives him Margaret’s new location and phone number.
