  • 24 The Berea Quarterly nine of us. I felt so like a weakling. In only one thing could I make any claim. At least I could walk. That was my only credential at first. The mountain women could do field work beyond anything I could think of, but when I walked twenty-five miles in a day and then went to meeting with the young folks at night, it made up for some of my awkwardness in other things. At first Mam made up with me because I was a "right natural-lookin' woman," I "favored Reppy up creek yonder." But when I returned from an all day's tramp, I was more than right natural lookin'! I was "pintedly clever" even though I was no good to "battle" the clothes with the heavy old battling stick. I worried over the geese before the school called. There were a dozen such aristocratic-looking bipeds and they seemed so fond of this hall of learning that I wondered what progress they had made. At least, they were the first to take their places within. Immediately I was thirsty. I knew it was not because of the dust. The air was too clean and pure for that. It must have been the sight of those ambitious fowl. So I made friends with one of the older girls—teacher had not come yet;—and she clasped my hand with a whole-hearted impulsiveness I had not quite learned to expect. We started toward the well. Curious, isn't it how progress seeps in! Somebody in that school had felt the thrill of a new idea, the individual drinking cup. But that was not possible yet. It would seem so unnecessary to the Board and to the parents. Why not begin gradually ? I smiled to myself when the girl told me with pride that they had a can for the boys to drink out of and a can for the girls, while the school below all
