  • ROSSVILLE GREENVILLE This map shows the possibility of a great number of interesting Circle Tours of varying lengths that may be made throughout eastern Tennessee and adjoining states. There are many scenic and historic attractions in this area. HOW TO REACH THE GREAT SMOKIES (Continued from Page 5) hour or two on top, and return to the base the same day. It is much more interesting, however, to spend a night on top, see a gorgeous sunrise, and return more leisurely the next day — possibly descending by a different route. There is a cabin and a lodge on the summit of Mt. LeConte where 75 people can get "accommodations" for the night. If the night is to be spent on any of the other peaks, it is necessary to take tents or other shelter, since there are no cabins on them as yet. Guides or horses may be secured at Gatlinburg, Cades Cove. Greenbrier. Cosby or Montvale Springs. Although guides may always be useful in pointing out places of interest and carrying supplies, many of the trails are sufficiently distinct that guides are not necessary to find the route. AUTOMOBILE: For those who do not have the time, or the inclination, to take hiking or horseback trips, there are many thrilling and inspiring panoramas and close-up beauty spots to be seen from the present Park highway system. The 100-mile Scenic Loop Highway is the backbone of this highway system, but most of the finer views are to be had from the various side trips that are to be made from the Loop. Especially interesting are those presented from the Newfound Gap, Cades Cove and Deals Gap highways, which penetrate the very heart of the new Park. Automobile roads to Greenbrier and Cosby also afford a great many superb views. There are hundreds of charming camp sites along the beautiful streams. AIRPLANE: Aerial trips from Knoxville over the Great Smokies may be made in an hour and one-half or two hours. While precipitous peaks tend to appear much smoother and flatter when viewed from the air, an airplane trip over the Park is a genuine treat. X.
