  • In this letter of May 25, 1898, Horace Kephart writes Amos J. Cummings letting him know that a “company of expert riflemen has been formed in St. Louis” inspired by the notice in the New York Sun describing Representative Cummings bill. Kephart requests a copy of the bill and assures Cummings that Major Pearce, representative for their district, will support the bill.

Dear Sir: A company of expert riflemen has been formed in St. Louis by members of the different sharpshooters' clubs of this city. We notice in a recent issue of the New York Sun that you have introduced a bill in Congress providing for the enlistment of one or more regiments of "independent American sharpshootors", to be chosen from the nation at large. Our men are anxious to join such a regiment. Will you kindly favor us with a copy of your bill, that we may fully understand its provisions? Any information concerning this movement will be gratefully acknowledged. We have written to our congressman, Major Pearce, and he has assured us that he will favor any bill for the enlistment of sharpshooters.
