  • In this letter of June 12, 1898, F. C. Heim writes Horace Kephart to let him know that he is sorry the government is not supporting the independent Sharpshooters. Heim sends 60 cents and asks Kephart to send him a copy of his Infantry tactics so he can prepare and he hopes to see a report on Kephart’s experiment with 30 caliber Winchester in the publication “Shooting and Fishing.”
  • June 12, 1898 Haubstadt, Ind. Mr. Horace Kephart. Kind Sir Your letter viewed I wish to say that I am sorry the government sees fit to “pour cold water” upon those of us, I say us for I am with you heart and soul, who are trying to do that which in my opinion he should encourage and ought to have done years ago. But be of good cheer your movement will not be lost. I enclose money order to and of 60 cents; please send me Infantry tactics. (paper) and mark that part of the drill that applies to your organization. I should not like to come to you as “green as a gourd” in regard to military drill. Hope you will report in S and F. the result of your experiments with the 30 cal. Winchester as adopted by you. Yours F. C. Heim
