DEPARTMENT OF LAW Ann Arbor May 28, 1898 Mr. E. W. Hawkins; Dear Sir, I write for particulars regarding the sharp- shooting company you are organizing. I am a Cal boy – now in college here – and I have always been used to my horse and gun. That is the way I want to go to war. I want to pick out my enemy and shoot him. I do not like the idea of shooting at a cloud of smoke and guessing where he is.
