Laura Kephart to Leonard Kephart, July 8, 1945, page 2

Chicago last week & had lunch with George & the boys. Roy graduated from H.S. last month & expects to be called any time now. Several of his friends had to leave the day after graduating, but his board put off their call to July. Pauline was in N.Y. on account of Mrs. Maisch illness. Don’t know what or how serious it may be. She is older than I. It seems rather hard for Pauline to be away the last few days of Roys being home. Mrs. M. has children living in N.Y. & money enough to go to a hospital. Pauline has always been called in when things went wrong, except while she was in Oregon. Now she is next door, the old order is in order, evidently.

In this letter of July 8, 1945, Laura Kephart writes to her son, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988). She says his talk inspired Mrs. Wheeler to ask if he knew of a weed killer for 5 leaf ivy. She tells him that David Fernow was in Chicago and met with George Kephart and his boys Roy and Horace. Roy just graduated from high school and will be called for the draft in July. She lets him know that she received a royalty check from Macmillon and that she has decided to keep the copyrights for Southern Highlanders and Camping and Woodcraft.
