  • Former Grad. Asst. Arrested: Charges of Abduction and Molestation Surface Scott Swift Staff Reporter A WCU graduate student and volunteer WCU cross-country coach, was arrested twice this month on charges involving taking indecent liberties with children attending a Macon County summer day camp. According to Captain Gene Ledford, head of juvenile services for the Macon County Sheriff's Department, Ronald David Treadway, who was employed as the camp's activity director, was first arrested August 5th after taking an 11-year-old girl from the camp under false pretenses. Ledford said Treadway told the girl he was taking her to lunch, instead he took her to his residence where the girl claims Treadway touched her inappropriately. Treadway was again arrested August 18th after a 10-year-old boy alledged that Treadway touched him inappropriately while swimming in a recreation park pool in late June. Treadway, age 33, could be sentenced for up to 35 years in prison if convicted on the abduction charge and both counts of taking indecent liberties. All the charges are felonies. Ronald Treadway could not be reached for comment on the charges, but his father, Erv Treadway, answered questions. Treadway said that his son came to WCU last spring to finish his masters degree after serving two years as athletic director at Bradenton Christian School in Florida. "Ronnie won many long distance running awards and honors in high school, was a two-time cross-country All American at Brevard College, and received a full scholarship to finish his bachelor's degree at Florida State University", said Erv Treadway. Ronald's father maintains that his son is "absolutely not guilty" and has complete confidence that "Ronnie" will be quickly exonerated of the charges. Health, P.E., and Recreation Department Head David Claxton stated that Treadway was invited to return back to the university this fall, but will not due to the time and stresses involved in preparing his defense. Treadway was released from custody after posting $30,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 1st at the Macon County Courthouse. Moving in was hectic all over WCU as students came back to CampUS On Sunday. Photo by Blake Frizzell WCU Experiences an 18% Increase in Freshmen Despite a nationwide decline in the number of college-bound high-school seniors, Western Carolina University experienced an 18 percent increase in freshmen enrollment. Preliminary estimates indicated that WCU would see a bumper crop of incoming freshmen when the academic year began. Those estimates were based on non-refundable residence hall room deposits and the number of incoming freshmen who have already taken part in WCU summer orientation sessions. Approximately 1,125 students have attended orientation programs, with another 80 or so scheduled to do so the weekend prior to the opening of school. "From all indications statewide and nationwide, we should be behind last year's numbers in receiving applications and in enrolling students, but we are going against the norm," said Drumont Bowman, Director of Admissions. Western enrolled a fall 1994 freshman class of between 1,250 and 1,300. That compares to a 1993 freshmen class of 1,057. The expected increase in the number of freshmen came despite the fact that August 1994 WELCOME BACK ♦WELCOME BACK What's so great about Generation X & Lollapallooza? • See Page 16 New sports editor gives really cheap seats. • See Page 22 Everything you missed this summer, in 2 short Ts. • See Page 5 Freshmen, don't have a clue what to do? •See Pages 12- 13
