all of eastern United States, have been necessarily cut down. But the virgin woodlands of this region have remained untouched, a sanctuary for trees. This area was established as a National Park by authorization of an act Congress approved on May 22, 1926. The move to create a national park was begun in 1899. Since 1926, the land for the park has been gradually acquired by the States of Tennessee and North Carolina, with some Federal aid, in addition to a contribution by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., through the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial in tribute to his mother. A plaque installed in the park reads, "This park was given one-half by the peoples and States of North Carolina and Tennessee and by the United States of America and one-half in memory of Laura Spelman Rockefeller by the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial founded by her husband John D. Rockefeller." The park is fifty-four miles long, its greatest width nineteen miles. The range itself meanders through the area for a distance of seventy-one miles. When acquisition of the land within the park section is completed, the park will comprise approximately 440,000 acres or 687.5 square miles. Descendants of settlers of Revolutionary days still live within the Park and around its borders. White wood smoke curls lazily from the chimneys of log cabins where Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett would feel perfectly at home. In pioneer cabins within the Park, a pioneer way of life goes on, and, if you listen sharply to mountaineer conversations you will be rewarded with fragments of early English speech

This 32-page booklet, simply titled, “Great Smoky National Park” was produced between 1935 and 1945. The booklet begins with a description of how the park was created, beginning with the 1899 effort by the Appalachian National Park Association to Congressional approval in 1926 and the significant financial donation made by the Rockefeller family. The booklet includes mention of mountain people and the Cherokee people living on the adjacent Qualla Boundary. Other topics include plant and animal life, weather, elevations, camping, trails, and trail rules. A “Travel Index” lists distances to various peaks from two park entrances and a schematic map shows relative elevations. Fifteen full-page, hand-colored photographs depict scenes in the park, including two of the “loop-over” road.
