  • Leave Dixie System at 7 A. M. Sunday, March 25, and drive to where the Bear Pen Hollow trail leaves Newfound Gap highway. The driving distance for the round trip is approximately 108 miles. The hiking distance is about 6V2 miles over a good but steep trail. Wear plenty of warm clothes, for March weather in the Smokies is rather fickle. Extra clothing or blankets left in the cars may come in handy on the drive back to Knoxville. Bring food for one meal, canteen, and flashlight or candle lantern, as a safety first measure. The leaders would like to ask that the party stay together during the entire trip. We hope to return to Knoxville not later than 8 P. M. Leaders: JIM WEBSTER (3-2161) FRANK JOYCE (2-5520) (Editor's note: The ascent to LeConte may be made by Alum Cave rather than by Bear Pen Hollow, to accommodate those who like the spectacular, but who may not care to go the entire distance.) MOUNTAINS For the lifting up of mountains, In brightness and in dread; t:or the peak where snow and sunshine Alone have dared to tread; For the dark of silent gorges, Where mighty cedars nod; For tlte majesty of the mountains. I thank Thee, oh, my God! —Lucy Larcom 20
