  • August 9 DUNN'S CREEK FROM COSBY Since some of the more obstreperous hikers are going up to Guyot today, it will be a good time for the rest of us to try a new hike in the same vicinity. We shall have a good road out to Newport and Cosby to the point where the county line intersects the park boundary. If the road beyond Cosby is not in good shape, drive as far as Valentine's (there is a small nursery here), and from there walk over to "Uncle Marshall" Justice's place. Then hike up Dunn's Creek road to Indian Camp Creek, and continue straight over the divide to the next creek, where may be found an extraordinary grape vine, sixty inches in circumference. From the point where the county line intersects the park boundary to the big vine is about four miles and a half. A quarter of a mile from the vine is a big hollow chestnut tree, in which four cows, three hogs, and two sheep were found after a snowstorm last year. If we wish, we can cross over and come down Indian Camp Fork and see on the way some of the finest hardwood forest in the park area. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. Bring food for one meal. Leaders: PHILIP HOUGH (Gatlinburg) and MRS. Edna Lynn Simms. August 23 CHIMNEY TOPS If you wish a real thrill, a healthy climb, a good trip, and a breath-taking view, the hike up the Chimneys is made to order for you. Although it is one of the shortest of the scheduled hikes, this is unquestionably one of the most rugged and precipitous climbs in the entire mountain area. We shall leave early Sunday morning and drive to Indian Gap Hotel, via Gatlinburg, parking our cars at the bridge above the hotel and taking the trail to the left of the river. Our destination, the twin peaks so aptly called 42
