  • Friday, March 26, 1965 The Western Carolinian Page 7 Tennis Team Starts Season Here April 6 The 1965 Catamount tennis season opens here Tuesday, April 6, when Western competes with Maryville College. The netters are looking forward to the season with much confidence and anticipation. The team is relatively young, having only three lettermen returning this year, and six Freshmen. Danny Tharpe, perhaps the greatest athlete WCC has produced, was appointed the new tennis coach by Athletic Director Tom Young. When asked what he thought of his new job, he said that he was pleased to join Western's coaching staff, and that he had high hopes for his new team and for the season's results. He added that this would be a building year for the team and that this years matches would prove vital to the players in the way of experience and future strength. He is looking forward to a very successful year, and is anxious to get started. Returning this year for the netters is junior Fred Ryder and sophomores Larry Shoe and Nick Kale. They are expected to lead the team throughout the season, followed by some fine freshmen, who just may be looking for the top positions on the squad. These freshmen are John Chirstenson, Bruce Loftin, David Carter, and Robert McCrimmon. Steve Coffee and Van Johnson are also showing good progress, and Coach Tharpe seems to be very impressed with his new team. It is going to be a rough season, but everyone seems confident for a successful one. Coach Tharpe doesn't want to take any chances, however, with his boys puttering out In the final game of a match. Since the first practice, which was last Tuesday, he has had them exercising vigorously and drilling extensively. If the boys can hold out and continue working as they have been, it should turn out to be a great season. Manager Paul Martin commented on the team and the coach, saying he is Impressed and surprised at the progress the team has made in the previous week and says Coach Tharpe is giving it all he has got to the club. It all sounds as if there is nothing to worry about, and looks exciting. Lets hope so, and support the team in the weeks to follow. Sixteen matches are presently scheduled for the tennis team Nine Conference Games Set In Weekend Playing Schedule New Device Saves Another Lite Mr. Bob Burrier was surf casting with a companion at Cedar Beach Overlook when a wave swept him and his companion from a sand spit where they were surf casting. His heavy fishing gear and chest-high waders were pulling him under until he inflated his Res-Q-Pak. Although his companion who had no device was lost, Mr. Burrier was able to stay afloat until help came. This pocket size cmerircncy life preserver is activated by squeezing it quickly. The pressure breaks a seal on a small CO2 bottle, and the gas Inflate* the device. It is currently being used by fishermen, hunters, water skiers, scuba divers, boating enthusiasts, military personnel, exi lor- ers, bridge builders, even life guards. With the 1965 Carolinas Conference baseball season just getting under way, last year's reg- MWO leader has already absorbed four straight defeats, tfarcM di them coming in conference action. Catawba College, which posted a 10-2 record in 1964, the best in the league during the regular season, dropped two straight games to Western Carolina, 5-4 and 9-1, and one to Elon last Saturday, 5-4. The Indians also dropped a 2-1 decision to Davidson's Wildcats last Monday at Davidson. Leading 1-0 going into the ninth, Catawba's defense fell apart, as did its pitching. A wild throw, two walks, and two wild pitches allowed the winning runs to cross the plate, giving Davidson its first win of the season. The Wildcats' only other game was a season-opening loss Also on Tutsday, Belmont Abbey defeated the Lenoir Rhyne Bears in Hickory, 8-4. The visiltors took a 6-4 lead as the result of three runs in the seventh as the Bears made two throwing errors on the same play. They added two more unearned runs in the eighth for the final score. The Bears played at Belmont Abbey yesterday, while Atlantic Christian was at Pembroke, Catawba at Pfeiffer, and Williams at Elon. Today's schedule pits Atlantic Christian at Pembroke, Presbyterian at The Citadel, and Newberry at High Point. Tomorrow Pfeiffer is at Lenoir Rhyne, Atlantic Christian at Pembroke, Presbyterian at The Citadel, Catawba at Belmont Abbey, Newberry at High Point, and Washington and Lee at Elon.
