The Catamounts put on a good show in the second half, actually outscoring the Warriors 32-30. It was a cold first period that put the Western squad to sleep, however, as WCU could muster only 21 points on 28 per cent shooting. Western's Kirby Thurston was the game's leading scorer with 19 points, and the big center proved his strength a- gainst ninth-ranked Marquette,. The loss broke a five game win streak for WCU, and put the Warriors' record at 16-3. Last night the University of Toledo took advantage of the travel - weary Cats and dumped WCU 101-73. ASU stops wrestlers Western Carolina's injury- riddled wrestling team dropped a 28-15 decision Tuesday night to Appalachian State in a match that was much closer that the final score indicates. The team that traveled to Boone was not at full strength as at least three weight classes were manned by reserve personnel. Dwight Barron, wrestling in the 126 pound class, scored the Cat's only pin while ASU compiled over half its points in pinning three WCU grapplers. John Simpson (142), Mitch Burr (167) and Jerry Toy (177) scored impressive deci sions for WCU. Burr, only a freshman, shows an 11-13 record which is the team's best mark. Toy, Simpson and the in-* jured Tommy Miller all have won nine matches. The Cats, now 7-7-1 for the season, will wrestle in the Mid-Southern Tournament this weekend in Maryville, Tennessee. Next week, they will return home for matches against the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (Tuesday) and UT-Chattanooga (Saturday). Western led several times in the first half and trailed by only four points at the intermission, but fell to fatigue in the fianl period. Toledo's zone press also produced 31 WCU turnovers while the Cats were being outscored 10-0 to start the second half. WCU is now 12-10. The Cats return to Cullowhee Wednesday for a game with Lenoir-Rhyne. Women zap Mars Hill in last home game Western Carolina University's women's basketball team pushed its record to 7-6 with a 82-53rompover visitingMars Hill in Reid Gymnasium last night. The Lady Cats started slow, but came on strong in the last ten minutes of the first half and took a 34-17 lead into the intermission. Coach Betty Westmoreland's team continued to build its lead, pushing it to as much as 32 points in the second half, to win going away. The Lady Cats had a balanced scoring attack, led by Brenda Halford and Brenda Johnson with 12 points apiece. Linda McJJowell followed with 10 points and Janet White added 9 points. Mars Hill, now 7-6, was led by Linda Robinson's 16 points. The Lady Cats will seeaction this weekend in the Winthrop College Tournament at Rock Hill, South Carolina.
