  • AUTOMOBILE TOURS Automobile touring in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most popular recreations of thousands of visitors in Western North Carolina and Last Tennessee. The number of motorists who visit the Great Smokies is increasing each year as new roads are constructed and old routes improved. The plans of the National Park Service call for the construction, over a period of several years, of a network of 230.5 miles of highways within the park. The first unit is scheduled to get under way in 1933. This will be the link, between Newfound Gap and Clingman's Dome, of the skyline highway which will ultimately extend from Newfound Gap to Deal's Gap. Listed herein are live scenic loop trips and two short excursions for the motorist. For convenience, tables, showing distances on each trip, are included. The motorist should consult especially the paragraphs relating to road conditions and supplement this information by data obtained from the various agencies which keep in touch with existing conditions. These agencies and their locations include: Asheville, Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Motor Club, main offices of the Cataloochee Ranch and Red Top Garage and Tours Company, Inc., 51 Arcade Building, and the Blue Cab Company. main office, Langren Hotel; Waynesville, Chamber of Commerce; Bryson City, Bennett's Drug Store; Knoxville, Chamber of Commerce, East Tennessee Automobile Club, and the Great Smoky Mountains Travel Bureau, main office.
