  • 50 OUR NATIONAL MONUMENTS The monument is reached from the west by road from Soledad, 12 miles distant, and from the eact from Hollister, 35 miles distant. The best road for motorists is that from Hollister, which is macadam as far as Cook post office. From there to the camp grounds just outside of the monument, which are free to the public, the dist ance is 4 miles. The San Benito County Farm Bureau has recently taken over this road as a public highway and is improving it as far as the camp grounds. The National Park Service is planning to extend this road several miles into the monument through Bear Gulch, PHOTO BY H. C. RYKER Pinnacle! National Monument the main entrance, as soon as funds for this purpose become available. Bear Gulch is a beautiful canyon with a good stream of water. The services of local authorized guides are available for parties desiring to make the many interesting trail trips into the monument. The custodian is W. I. Hawkins, of Hollister, Calif. No fee is charged visitors entering the monument lands, and it is not necessary to cross the private land unless the visitor desires to see that section.
