  • Jazz Fest A high school jazz festival, featuring performances by saxophonist Nick Brignola and the jazz quintet "Around Midnight" of Asheville, will be held at WCU Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, by WCU's department of music. During the festival, select students from area high schools will perform in two jazz ensembles under the direction of WCU music instructor Mario Gaetano and trumpet instructor James Buckner. The students will rehearse Friday and Saturday and give performances at 4 p.m. Saturday in the recital hall of the Music-English Building. Brignola will conduct an improvisation clinic at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Band Room of the Music-English Building and perform with WCU's Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. Friday in the recital hall. An Atlanta Records recording artist, Brignola has performed with such leading jazz musicians as Buddy Rich, Woody Herman and Chuck Mangione and was selected as the nation's top baritone saxophonist in the 18th annual critics poll conducted by Downbeat magazine. The public is invited to attend the festival's concerts and clinics without charge. Hamlet Opens The final production of WCU's 1980-81 season of. plays is Shakespear's tragedy "Hamlet," to be presented April 5-11 in WCU's Little Theatre. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m., April 5-11, with a 2 p.m. matinee scheduled for Sunday, April 5. Presented by the University Players and WCU's department of speech and theatre arts, the play revolves around the inner struggle that Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, faces as he contemplates ways to avenge the murder of his royal father by his mother, Gertrude, and uncle, Claudius, who are reigning together as king and queen. The 27-member cast includes David Gaddy as Hamlet, W. Alex Norris as Claudius, Mark Delk as Polonius, Tim Caudle as Horatio, Steve Torgoman as Laertes, Tish Merrill as Gertrude, and Sherry Hodge as Ophelia. The production is directed by Carolyn F. Rauch, assistant professor of speech and theatre arts, and features a contemporary set design by Richard S. Beam, also an assistant professor. Costume design is under the direction of Lloyd Walter Eastland III and makeup design is by Lee Reed. Tickets, priced at $3 for adults, $2 for students and $1 for children, may be purchased week days from 1 until 4 p.m. in Room 122 Hoey, beginning April 1. For reservations, call 227-7365.
