  • The soldiers has got so they care for nothing. There is a heap of them that has forgot what home is. There is some of the biggest devils here that I ever saw. We get plenty to eat. Each man gets 2 ounces of meat a day, but it is thick that 2 ounces will do a man generally about two days. It is fully one half inch thick and one half of that is pure skin and you know that we ought not grumble. They say the next meat we draw will be a mule. I told our commissary to be certain and get a hind quarter. Every thing is quiet along the lines of the Rappahannock at this time, but I am unable to tell how long it will remain so. The opinion seems to prevail among the soldiers that there will be some powerful fighting here as soon as the weather moderates, but it is unknown to any one when or where the fight will commence. I will finish in the morning.
