June the 13th, 1862 Camp near Richmond, Va. Dear Friends I write you a few lines this morning to inform you of my present situation. I am not well at this time. I have been very sick for two or three days, but I think I am on the mend a little. If you don't get the chance to send my clothes till you get this letter, I can inform you that there is a fellow by the name of Wallace Fowler that lives about a mile below Jim Carpenters on the Island Ford road that will be coming to our company before long and likely he will fetch them. I also want you to send me a bottle of Black Powders for Cousin Ransen Price. He is in bad health and would be very thankful of them. I want you to state how your wheat looks now and whether you have got a good crop of peaches or not. Dried fruit is worth 8 dollars per bushel in Richmond. I want you to write how you are off for cotton cards. I can get a pair in Richmond for eight or ten dollars and it is better to give that than to do without them. I don't want you to spend a dime of gold or silver and if the old man has to pay out any money for hiring give him paper money to hire with and let him give you gold

In this letter of June 13, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends from his location near Richmond, Virginia where he has been sick for the past few days. He enquires about the crops and advises them to keep their gold and silver and use paper money instead. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
